The Puzzler Posted May 31, 2023 #2226 Share Posted May 31, 2023 (edited) My uncle is from Norway, Olaf Christian, I only ever knew him as Uncle Chris, but my Aunty and he have travelled Norway extensively, what an adventure! And I thought Finland was exciting, it’s got nothing on Norway. Edited May 31, 2023 by The Puzzler

Frank_Hoenedge Posted July 10, 2023 #2228 Share Posted July 10, 2023 There is a doctorate thesis in the works Quote Ph.D. candidate Anthony Jakob investigated whether the languages of prehistoric populations left traces in Lithuanian and Latvian. About five thousand years ago, a group of people migrated from the steppe in what is now eastern Ukraine and southern Russia to the rest of the European continent. They took their language with them: Indo-European became the basis of many contemporary European languages, such as Dutch and English. Yet it was not the only language spoken. Other groups had lived in Europe for thousands of years and spoke their own lost languages. "We wanted to know if these original populations left traces in the languages of Europe today," says Jakob. Doggerlander might also have influenced languages from Norway back to Ukraine. Fingers crossed it’s a sound methodology.

That's what's been posted in this thread: the Maglemosian culture and language could have spread from Doggerland, along the northern ice lakes (boats) to as far east as either the Ob or the Yenitsey (sp?).

I’m thinking the remnant people from Doggerland, some left in Britain, some moving on to the continent, including Norway, Denmark, Poland…became the Unetice Culture and the links that define it, to Britain especially. The tin, the chalk covered burials, connections to Wessex, everything really. Edited July 11, 2023 by The Puzzler

+Pettytalk Posted October 30, 2023 #2240 Share Posted October 30, 2023 This thread, a merger, is one of those, barely kept alive, old tales running on empty, here at UM. It was asked about a tittle: And why the subtitle "not Atlantis"? Who cares about Atlantis? This is the real thing. Sarcasm here goes a long way back, even before Atlantis. Before I get the treatment, for the record, I'm just perusing, and window shopping...I 'm only asking how much is that doggy in the window? I'm not interested in this thread, because it's not Atlantis. So Long!

OK fair enough too, how about this time frame instead.. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prehistoric_Britain#Mesolithic “but there was a cold spell around 6,200 BC which lasted about 150 years.[24] The plains of Doggerland were thought to have finally been submerged around 6500 to 6000 BC,[25] but recent evidence suggests that the bridge may have lasted until between 5800 and 5400 BC, and possibly as late as 3800 BC.[26] The warmer climate changed the arctic environment to one of pine, birch and alderforest; this less open landscape was less conducive to the large herds of reindeer and wild horse that had previously sustained humans. Those animals were replaced in people's diets by pig and less social animals such as elk, red deer, roe deer, wild boar and aurochs (wild cattle),[27] which would have required different hunting techniques.[28] Tools changed to incorporate barbs which could snag the flesh of an animal, making it harder for it to escape alive. Tiny microliths were developed for hafting onto harpoons and spears. Woodworking tools such as adzes appear in the archaeological record, although some flint blade types remained similar to their Palaeolithic predecessors. The dog was domesticated because of its benefits during hunting, and the wetland environments created by the warmer weather would have been a rich source of fish and game. Wheat of a variety grown in the Middle East was present on the Isle of Wight at the Bouldnor Cliff Mesolithic Village dating from about 6,000 BC.” Edited October 30, 2023 by The Puzzler
The Puzzler Posted October 30, 2023 #2250 Share Posted October 30, 2023 (edited) Having dogs, I think about dogs and humans..personally I think dogs helped humans be humans..like,…they are warm, a three dog night means it’s so cold you need three dogs to keep you warm…I’m talking early humans, from Africa….so they kept you warm, they bark at the slightest thing that might be a threat to you….like my neighbours dog, but still Ripper might be coming here to attack me, they don’t even know night, like night is day, bound through that bush like it’s nothing…I dare say creatures like Cerberus (Spot), Anubis and all dogs including Lupa of the Romulus and Remus mythology certainly held sway in the “nurture” vs nature way of life. A total fave piece of art…. Edited October 30, 2023 by The Puzzler
