News-Bot Posted December 18, 2002 #1 Share Posted December 18, 2002 Organisms that have lain dormant for 2,800 years have sprung back to life after scientists retrieved them from a frozen lake in the Antarctic. The lake has been buried under 19 metres (62 feet) of ice – yet it appears to contain life-forms. Core samples taken from slushy layers of ice and water just above the surface contained frozen bacteria and algae that were revived in the laboratory, researchers said. The example of survival for so long, buried in one of the most extreme environments on Earth, raises the prospect that extraterrestrial organisms may exist under similar extremes elsewhere in the solar system.
