2012 and Ragnarok!

I'm normally a hater of all things 2012, but I think it would be fun to think up some ideas OTHER THAN the christian rip off of doomsday (or a giant invisble planet hitting us) and bring back the original topic of Ragnarok, like it should be.

So anyway... I'm quite looking forward to Thor being killed by the venom of the world serpent, Loki breaking free and attacking Heimdall, thus shattering the rainbow ridge; Bifrost. If I also remember correctly, this is the time when Odin will be swallowed by Fenrir, but Fenrir will be killed by Odin's son; Vadir.

I don't think I read about any of this in the mayan calendar, though.

Then again, nobody read anything about Nibiru within the mayan calendar either, so I guess everyone on the planet is at free reign to make up whatever they want and shove the event in the year 2012.

Oh yeah, you're also gonna go to HEL, where one of the original rulers of the dead lives, not HELL where a big red goatman with a pointy tail lives.

Should be a fun Yule season in 2012!

2012 is a Hoax.

Ask yourself, what do we do when the calendar runs out? (Does the world stop at New Years and 1 second?)

Print a new one.

I am aware it's a load of rubbish, this is meant as satire

Seeing as you hate Christian rip-offs....no Christmas for you ever again.

No gifts.

No holiday.

No time-off from work.

No parties.

Now go to your room and don't come out until September 2013.

Will you be escorted to the halls of valhalla by the valkyries? Will you be dining with Odin, Huginn and Muninn? or will you see Yggdrasil fall in midgard?...lol

On a side note, you forgot the Greeks, Never forget the 4 ages of men ..Golden age, silver age, bronze age and iron age...it states:

"For the father will not agree with his children, nor the children with their father, nor guest with his host, nor comrade with comrade, nor will brothers love each other as once they did. Men will dishonour their parents as they attain Old Age, without repaying them the cost of their nurture. Might shall be right, so that one man may sack another man's city. There will be no merit for the man who keeps his word, or for the just, or for the good; rather, men will praise the evil-doer and admire his audacity and violent dealings. Strength will be right, and respect will vanish as an empty word. Peace being banished, the MUSES will depart; therefore they will lead a life in ugliness. The wicked will hurt the worthy, speaking false words against them; therefore will Envy walk along with them. The gods will forsake mortal men, letting bitter sorrows fall upon them; and being defenceless like children in the wilderness, they will not find any help against all evil they themselves created."

I will have you know that christmas was celebrated before the christians ripped it off and based it around christ. It would be nice if you researched before you posted.

I also DON'T celebrate christmas, nor do I recieve gifts (I give gifts but I don't recieve them).

I'm not turning this into a religious post, this is about Ragnarok

Oooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo... I like that quotation, I admit that I have never heard it.

It's nice to see that somebody didn't take this post seriously.

I must say that I actually called it 'Yule' in my original post, which is what it would have been known as to the nords.

I really didn't want this to turn into a religious war, that's why I jumped the barrel with what I said, though I still don't celebrate christmas. I enjoy the time of year, but it has no meaning to me.

I to like playing with the doomsday scenarios of different cultures trying to see how they all could possibly mesh.

Speaking of which you catch the finale of Doctor Who - it spliced some of that 2012 stuff into the plot.

Bah Ragnarok is a bunch of bulk. I mean the gods know exactally how they're going to die but they do nothing to prevent it? None of they said 'hey maybe if we off Loki now we won't all die later'? Besides if things did look bad then Thor would just call on Captain American and the other Avengers. Of course nuts like Dementis convently forget that.

Shiver me timbers! One never knows, do one, when it comes to the likes of THE END.

Sure you know the lobby's going to be packed, and then there's the question of Karma if you try to sneak into some other show what don't co-in-side with your perch ticket.

Have we covered the situation where you show up, there's nary a space at the tables, all are filled up with partying Vikings and their wenches, or maybe you arrive and there's not a single unattached virgin at the palace you just apperaed in?

What about you suddenly wake up in a very, very long line with the most severe case of Deja Vu you can remember. You notice people being shuttled to the very front and getting in and the line seems to be at a standstill. What The... eventually you remember those quick time shuttles are for the ones that do the suicide route, tisk, tisk, back again, back again, jiggity jig...

Odin won the ability to transcend His Own limitations through a self-inflicted ordeal (See Hávamál, St. 138-165). He hanged Himself upon Yggdrasil, wounded by His own Spear to win the knowledge of the Runes. Woden mastered the shamanic technique of using physical and emotional crisis to force the psyche beyond its limits and into the transcendent realm of power, knowledge and wisdom. In this crisis unto death, consciousness is forced out of its habitual and curtailed perceptions and into a much vaster apprehension of reality. There is a very similar shamanic lore in most folk religions the world over. Usually, the seeker of knowledge must climb a tree or pole of some kind (which symbolises the spine), must suffer a personal death, hanged between Heaven and Earth, and in many cases is consumed by animals. The shamanic death journey is brought about in different ways; sometimes it is brought by illness, or through deliberate dancing to exhaustion; sometimes by fasting, or through painful (usually self-inflicted) wounds. Later, if the Shaman survives this, he/she returns to the middle world in a body reconstituted by his power animals, and carrying power and knowledge of the Worlds Beyond. Often the power of the shaman is contained in songs that he/she has learned from Other Worldly guides and allies. Traditionally, this knowledge and power is generously distributed to the folk through healing and blessing ceremonies. Odin's sacrifice on Yggdrasil is a perfect description of these shamanic techniques. When He wins the Runes, the great Mysteries, He immediately makes them available to the other Gods, and to worthy humans. Wodan is a healer in the shamanic tradition. As He is able to travel from the heights to the depths, so is He able to make whole what is broken, to bring the separate parts of the soul and body together into a healthy whole. The Second Merseburg Charm is a precious record of Wodan as Healer: a shamanic aspect of the God that was strongly suppressed by the Christians. Wodan was and is, however, a God of wholeness and healing, and a God of generosity, always willing to share knowledge and wisdom with the deserving. This has always been the role of the Great Shaman.

Whenever there is a tale of destruction there is implicitly a subtext of renewal. To cultures who held mysteries as important (which is just about all bar us) often the subtext was more important. Odin is a story about a shaman and Ragnarok literally means 'gods fate' so what is the allegorical message behind the myth.

The idea of the serpent could relate to the world axis, geomagnetism or tectonic plates. Basically the ancients thought it was usually giant serpents that caused earthquakes. Fenrir could be a comet or more likely a cloud of smoke. Anyone remember the Icelandic ashcloud. To an ancient mind witnessing that I think it would be a pretty good description of Fenrir swallowing the Sun maybe. These were periodic things that these ancient people experienced and tried to explain using gods and monsters. Anything beyond that is our false interpretations on to things.

So, no doomsday as such. There are always risks of cataclysms but nothing world ending. On the otherhand does it siggest that there is a greater reality available to mankind? Perhaps and maybe Sleipner is some ambiguous connection to kundalani or something. Well how many eight legged horses do you think have been born?

The date of December 25th probably originated with the ancient "birthday" of the son-god, Mithra, a pagan deity whose religious influence became widespread in the Roman Empire during the first few centuries A.D. Mithra was related to the Semitic sun-god, Shamash, and his worship spread throughout Asia to Europe where he was called Deus Sol Invictus Mithras. Rome was well-known for absorbing the pagan religions and rituals of its widespread empire. As such, Rome converted this pagan legacy to a celebration of the god, Saturn, and the rebirth of the sun god during the winter solstice period. The winter holiday became known as Saturnalia and began the week prior to December 25th. The festival was characterized by gift-giving, feasting, singing and downright debauchery, as the priests of Saturn carried wreaths of evergreen boughs in procession throughout the Roman temples.

Variations of this pagan holiday flourished throughout the first few centuries after Jesus Christ, but it probably wasn't until 336 AD that Emperor Constantine officially converted this pagan tradition into the "Christian" holiday of Christmas.

Come on Search mate, you'll have to do better than that. You can't just equate Shamash with Mithras without any substance or justification to support it. The near east mythologies is far more complex and although Mithras may have persian influences it was also more parthian and phrygian don't you think.

The concnept of the 25th of Dec as the date of the ressurection of the dying god is older than roman times. Often with symbols of evergreens like Dionysus and Tammuz. This is not all that surprising with it being close to the winter solstice and all when you think about it.

I agree with what you said about Christmas originating from Saturnalia though and I suspected it might have been that Constantine fella.

Bomb? What Bomb? We don need no stinkin Bombs when we have the likes of Tiny Tim making music.

Say, have we got to the part where all the Welsh, Dolphins and a flower pot with a single daisy disappear and a voice like Gods's resounds all over the planet "So Long And Thanks For All The Guinness"?
