Cufflink Posted July 15, 2004 #1 Share Posted July 15, 2004 Manchester police today unveiled a scheme which would allow them to send messages to peoples' mobile phones, within 30 seconds of an explosion in Manchester city centre. It is part of a system set up to evacuate the area quickly in the event of major incidents - such as bombs, gas and chemical leaks, fires and floods. Messages would also be sent to personal computers and pagers under the Manchester Priority Alert Scheme. The city centre has now been split into 29 zones with evacuation procedures developed for each area. Many people will remember that Manchester was the target of a huge IRA bomb in the Summer of 1996, which caused hundreds of casualties, and left the city council with years of rebuilding. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/manches...ter/3894847.stm
