Psykonos Posted October 11, 2010 #2 Share Posted October 11, 2010 Hopefully they won't be wiped out. Some people judge whether a species should be preserved based on it's obvious impact on the ecosystem or value to people. Which is very selfish in my opinion. It's no excuse for wiping out an organism that's been millions of years in the making. They are kind of cute in a weird, freaky way

booNyzarC Posted October 12, 2010 #7 Share Posted October 12, 2010 It wasn't anywhere near as bad as I had imagined after the commentary. It almost looks cartoonish... but yeah, I definitely feel sorry for the poor little boogers being dredged up like that.

farandaway Posted October 12, 2010 #12 Share Posted October 12, 2010 If poor 'Ziggy' (he does look like him) is facing extinction, then why did they take this specimen out of the ocean? Little guy does look miserable, doesn't he?

Harks Posted October 12, 2010 #15 Share Posted October 12, 2010 I don't get it, they say that the fish usually floats around, but get caught from crabing and lobster catching. As far as I know they catch crabs and lobsters in pots and crates, not nets. So what, do they get in the pots and crates or get picked up along the way, I don't think so, this might be a bogus artical IMO.
Eldorado Posted October 13, 2010 #16 Share Posted October 13, 2010 I don't get it, they say that the fish usually floats around, but get caught from crabing and lobster catching. As far as I know they catch crabs and lobsters in pots and crates, not nets. So what, do they get in the pots and crates or get picked up along the way, I don't think so, this might be a bogus artical IMO. "The fish, which lives at depths of up to 800m, is rarely seen by humans but it lives at the same depths as other ocean organisms, such as crabs and lobsters and other edible sea creatures. As a result the fish, which is inedible, is being dragged up with other catches by trawler fishermen. Marine expert Professor Callum Roberts, from University of York, said the blobfish had plenty to be miserable about. Prof Roberts, who wrote the book "The Unnatural History of the Sea", said: "Blobfish are very vulnerable to being dragged up in these nets and from what we know this fish is only restricted to these waters. "The Australian and New Zealand deep trawling fishing fleets are some of the most active in the world so if you are a blobfish then it is not a good place to be. "A very large amount of the deep sea is under threat from bottom trawling which is one of the most destructive forms of fishing."" http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/picturegalleries/howaboutthat/7077472/Blobfish-worlds-most-miserable-looking-marine-animal-facing-exinction.html

redhen Posted December 28, 2010 #22 Share Posted December 28, 2010 Overfishing? WHO WOULD WANT TO FISH FOR THAT? No one. They're accidentally caught up in huge trawling nets. Just another species to add to the list. http://www.well.com/~davidu/extinction.html It's called "development", "growth" or "progress". /sarcasm off

The term "Overfishing" is usually applied to things that are actually fished for. I realize that nobody wanted to fish for this deliberately.
