DETENTION CENTRE PROTEST

Demonstrators have targeted three UK detention centres as part of a national wave of protest action.

The rallies follow two apparent suicides in centres for asylum seekers this month, one of which sparked major riots.

The National Coalition for Anti-Deportation Campaigns says the protests are to "demand an end to the deadly policy of indefinite detention of men, women and children who are not accused of any crime".

Demonstrations have been held at Campsfield Removal Centre, near Oxford, HMP Liverpool and Dover Immigration Removal Prison.

On Sunday, people are expected to gather at Dungavel Removal Centre and HMP Forest Bank, in Manchester.

North West co-ordinator for the Coalition, Emma Ginn, said it was important to raise awareness.

She said: "We are here because the conditions of detention are so bad that two men were driven to kill themselves.

"When people are locked up and they are not accused of any crime, when it's arbitrary and indefinite, with frequent claims of assault, you can't expect nothing to go wrong."

This week the Home Office launched an inquiry into the death of a 22-year-old Vietnamese man at the Dungavel centre in Lanarkshire.

Campaigners say the asylum seeker killed himself after being moved from another centre following a riot.

He had apparently been moved there from Harmondsworth centre in west London.

There were serious disturbances there on July 19 after a 31-year-old detainee was found hanged.

For gods sakes. I wish they shut they moaning faces. These people have afiled to get Asylum, they are being temporarly detained until they are sent home. What do they want us to do with them, let them out onto the streets until we find transport for them, allowing them to disappear and never be seen again as they become illegal imigrants?!

The detention centres are not jails, the people may be under house arrest but conditions could be a far worse. And I trust you they have done something wrong, they are illegal immigrants.

The man they talk about committing suicide from Vientnam, I notice they miss out the fact he lived in Germany before comming here. What persecution was he recieving in Germany?! Was his life under threat from the government or civil conflict in Germany? No.

The immigrant issue in the Uk has gone insane and the public are demanding something be done about it. But now that they have here you people come in an say 'no, we should allow anyone who wants to be in the country, be in the country' blah blah blah

Grow up, get lost, let the government follow the voice of the MAJORITY of the people.

In semi-relation to this topic, an illegal immegrate today slit his 10-month old baby's throat today we he was told he would be deported soon but the child (who has a British mother) would not. He had been n a detention centre up until a year ago but was released by a successful campaign claiming his only crime was being a foriegner.

Well, as far as I'm concerned Emma Ginn and others like her have that baby's blood on their hands.
