TheMcGuffin Posted January 10, 2011 #2 Share Posted January 10, 2011 The official explanation always was that they became disoriented and flew off into the Atlantic Ocean until they ran out of gas. I'm inclined to think that's true, but it seems really strange that all five pilots got so badly confused, and they just didn't turn around and fly west into the setting sun. That would have taken them back over Florida. Their flight leader, Taylor, evidently thought they were over the Florida Keys or somewhere in the gulf of Mexico, even though by continuing to fly east he was simply going out into the ocean. How is it that all of them became so badly confused?
