All you do is use the ^ key on your keyboard to reference the person above you and say something about them. (That's shift + 6 if you're not sure where it is.) so someone under me might say, "^ is a newb!" and I might say "^ looked at my posting stats!", then the next person might say "^ and ^^ are captain obvious' in training...", and so forth.
