Still Waters Posted January 26, 2011 #1 Share Posted January 26, 2011 The strange and beautiful seahorse has fascinated people for centuries. And scientists now say they understand why this unusual fish evolved its equine-like head and S-shape. A study published in the journal Nature Communications has shown that, compared to straight-bodied pipefish from which they evolved, seahorses are able to strike at more distant prey. The team concludes that the seahorses' delicate curves evolved to help it hunt and feed. Both seahorse and pipefish feed on tiny marine creatures, striking at them and sucking them into their snouts. Von Bismarck Posted January 28, 2011 #9 Share Posted January 28, 2011 tell me what you imagine to be evidence? Evidence is a objective way of testing of a theory or a hypothesis so that it can be reproduced by others.

Draco Viridis Posted January 28, 2011 #16 Share Posted January 28, 2011 how has dumbolution transformed a pipefish into the seahorse? lol I believe the answer is: a gradual adaptation to geographically isolated ecological niches. Kind of like the way the first christian church has EVOLVED into all of its varied modern manifestations.

Copasetic Posted January 28, 2011 #19 Share Posted January 28, 2011 worm porn helps shed light on evolution of sperm was today's science news these guys are fighting to maintain there jobs lol ?? You do realize that evolutionary biology is an applied science as well right? Ergo, lots people in applied science fields use tenets of the modern synthesis everyday in their day jobs.... just like darwin evolution was dead years ago lol I know User, you claim to be a doctor (as played on TV?), so you should probably realize "Darwinian evolution" just describes natural selection, which is a theory that explains how the biological fact of evolution occurs. There is of course, much more to modern evolutionary theory than just what Darwin surmised (in deed, he was wrong about some things) and that amassed amount of knowledge we call the modern synthesis. Likewise I'd expect that you know that the modern synthesis is anything but 'dead years ago' and is the foundation of modern biology. Certainly Dr. Dobzhansky wasn't pulling everyone's leg when he said; "Nothing in Biology Makes Sense Except in the Light of Evolution" as it really is a unifying theory. Knowing you, as a doctor, surely already know all this, we'll forgive the tongue-and-cheek sarcasm how has dumbolution transformed a pipefish into the seahorse? lol Mayhap you should venture to read the paper? Being a doctor and all, I am sure you are already familiar with how the scientific endeavor of journals work and I shan't have to explain this to one such as yourself. J.B. Posted January 29, 2011 #23 Share Posted January 29, 2011 That's no Dr. That's a hack. No actual doctor could disbelieve evolution at all. Or biology. I smell a phony. Animals couldn't be related at all outside of evolution. . . relation is GENETIC. Genetics are the driving force behind evolution. My guess, the Seahorse was a pipefish that got caught in a famine and adapted to use less energy to hunt. Ergo, ambush predator.

Copasetic Posted January 30, 2011 #25 Share Posted January 30, 2011 if we were living in alice in wonderland we'd find a pipefish changing into a seahorse lol You should meet Dunning and Kruger; The Dunning–Kruger effect is a cognitive bias in which unskilled people make poor decisions and reach erroneous conclusions, but their incompetence denies them the metacognitive ability to appreciate their mistakes.[1] The unskilled therefore suffer from illusory superiority, rating their ability as above average, much higher than it actually is, while the highly skilled underrate their own abilities, suffering from illusory inferiority. This leads to the situation in which less competent people rate their own ability higher than more competent people. It also explains why actual competence may weaken self-confidence. Competent individuals falsely assume that others have an equivalent understanding. "Thus, the miscalibration of the incompetent stems from an error about the self, whereas the miscalibration of the highly competent stems from an error about others."[2] Are you going to add anything to the discussion or support any of your claims?
