Are conspiracy theories true ?

Stephen Treehorn: You don’t need to be surfing the net too long before you come across a conspiracy theory link which suggests an alternative view to the mainstream media. These alternative views, on the whole, depict a ruling elite of megalomaniacs belonging to exclusive bloodlines hell bend on perpetuating the enslavement of the vast majority of the human race.

One observation always strikes me when I read such ‘exposes’ is that if the ruling elite have such control, as the conspiracy theorists insist, why do they allow the information to circulate? A very clear example is Wikileaks and its egocentric front man Julian Assange. Through disclosure of previously classified information the team at WikiLeaks has exposed, amongst others, the horrific violence inflicted by the United States army on the people of Iraq. Information includes the official ‘violent’ death toll of 109,032, although the Lancet puts this figure at 601,027 (31% coalition forces, 41% unknown), and Opinion Research Business Survey has estimated in excess of 1,000,000 deaths. Whichever figure is correct the horrendous scale of violence inflicted on the Iraqi people is staggering and surely something the elite would wish to suppress.

Well if they started suppressing ideas, eventually people would realize that the theories were in fact true, so they would be shooting themselves in the foot. I think the current governments who want to hide things, are happy letting the ideas go around because they know the majority of the public think they are all lunatic ideas believed by the gullible, if they started censoring ideas them people would then start taking notice more, causing more to believe them, so its in their best interest to just let them circulate in the "tin foil hat" circles.

It all depends on what theories your talking about, as some conspiracy theories have turned out to be right, so the articles fails on that basis alone, but that is not to say that all conspiracy theories are correct, some might have some truth attached to them and some might have no truth attached to them at all.

I have never paid much attention to conspiracy theories, some are just nuts, yet I would not be surprised to find out one day that there are some very rich people who actually pull all of the strings in some way.

I think that conspiracies theories exist because:

1. Conspiracies do happen, and they happen all the time. Enron in California, the myth of Iraqi WMDs, Curveball from the US DIA, Madoff, international bankers and their fuzzy math. PNAC. And now their successor, Foreign Policy Initiative (FPI: http://www.ipsnews.net/news.asp?idnews=54629) presently taking action. 9-11 took a conspiracy. Whoever you think did it, it was indeed and undoubtedly a conspiracy. Governments conspire, publicly and in private, as we have seen.

2. For the USA, current mainstream media is a State mouth-piece, with propaganda and perception control at massive levels. People are now distrusting push media outlets because more and more people are becoming aware of how false and biased the news is these days. It is now to the point where people can pick their biases from media. And somewhere in it all, syncing left brain with the right, the truth resides there for each of us to find, to intuit.

3. There is a basic and essential distrust in the the stories of happenings and events, of functioning coming from our governments. It is everywhere. Protests are everywhere. Governments are doubted everywhere. There is, in time and date, the need to get democratic control over them again. (Caps for emphasis only)

WE ARE TIRED OF BEING LIED TO. WE INSTANTLY KNOW WHEN OUR GOVERNMENT LIES TO US. So then, if we distrust the words from our governments, and if we have a need to understand events on a deep level, conspiracy theories emerge.

You want to stop the conspiracy theories? Stop the lies coming from our governments. And force mainstream media to tell the truth and severely punish them when they lie or sell infomercial news.

They say there is truth in every rumor. I think the same goes for most conspiracy theories.

Back in the 80's, in a class in organizational behavior, it was taught that a rumor is about 52% likely to be true. I have always remembered that.

I'm beginning to think that conspiracy theories are mainstream, while the true stories get put on the backburner. The JFK assassination, 9/11, government coverups of UFOs, aliens, Area 51, etc.

You know... There are so many different conspiracy theories and so many different iterations of them and they are all formulated in such a scattershot way that they pretty much cover every possible version... Just playing the odds, one of them is probably correct. Now that is a kinda scary idea that just occurred to me. Thank you so much for depriving me of sleep for the rest of the week.
