Beckys_Mom Posted March 11, 2011 #1 Share Posted March 11, 2011 Tsunami hits north-eastern Japan after massive quake A massive earthquake has hit the north-east of Japan, triggering a tsunami that has caused extensive damage. Japanese television showed cars, ships and even buildings being swept away by a vast wall of water after the 8.9-magnitude earthquake. The quake has sparked fires in several areas including Tokyo, and numerous casualties are feared. It struck about 250 miles (400km) from the capital at a depth of 20 miles. There have been powerful aftershocks. The tremor hit at 1446 local time (0546 GMT). Seismologists say it is one of the largest earthquakes to hit Japan for many years. +susieice Posted March 11, 2011 #2 Share Posted March 11, 2011 I just woke up and saw this when I went online. Tsunami warnings are out for the Hawaiian Islands, and the west coast of the US and Canada. Another incredible tragedy. An 8.9 is a very powerful earthquake. There's a lot of damage in Tokyo. http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/as_japan_earthquake

Shadesong Posted March 11, 2011 #5 Share Posted March 11, 2011 This is awful. One of the families that I'm in contact with over there were planning to fly back to the States Monday, but the airport is flooded, damaged from the earthquake itself, etc. Things are really bad over there right now. ilovetacos Posted March 11, 2011 #6 Share Posted March 11, 2011 I just wanted to say that my thoughts and prayers are with the Japanese people. I love Japanese culture...their history, food, music, art, you name it...I love it! It's been a dream of mine and my husbands to visit Japan or to live there. Blessings to Japan! A beautiful country! Mr.United_Nations Posted March 11, 2011 #12 Share Posted March 11, 2011 Tidal wave is one wave where a Tsunami is a series of waves.
Athans Posted March 11, 2011 #13 Share Posted March 11, 2011 I don't know where I have been lol. I just heard about this. I am watching it on the news now. It is crazy! They said the death toll is easially 1000 people and hundreds are missing. Is it just me or has this kind of stuff been more frequent?

Athans Posted March 11, 2011 #16 Share Posted March 11, 2011 that was earlier in the day like 8 hoursd ago I know they were concerned about one and they were trying to get temps down but there is confirmed damage. I guess they are STILL getting after shocks.
farandaway Posted March 11, 2011 #17 Share Posted March 11, 2011 We've also been getting some surges here in the coastal towns of California, Crescent City is supposed to have quite a bit of damage, and some marinas and boating docks up and down the coast. Nothing on the scale of what the Japanese are going through, of course. One of the reasons I wanted to move out of Southern California is because I hate earthquakes (been through more than I care for), and now I'm in Northern California, where I think they're overdue for a big one! I guess they are STILL getting after shocks. They will continue to get aftershocks for at least 1-2 years after the initial tremor. However, the largest expected aftershock has passed. I just got home from work and I'm glad that most people did heed the warnings. Property damage can be dealt with but not the loss of people. Best wishes and in spirit at least, I'm right with you too.

+susieice Posted March 12, 2011 #22 Share Posted March 12, 2011 Sounds like Hawaii rode it out alright. Link also talks about California. We can be thankful really. That's not going to mean alot to the people affected, but it could have been much worse. http://www.usatoday.com/news/nation/2011-03-11-Tsunami-Hawaii_N.htm
Shadesong Posted March 12, 2011 #23 Share Posted March 12, 2011 217 confirmed deaths, 1000 or more estimated. This is horrible. I have a friend over there who attends the university that I was lined up to study at in the Spring. I haven't heard from him since all of this began, so if any of you guys are the praying type, it would be immeasurably appreciated. I'll post updates as I get them.
