Historic flight for veteran osprey

Still Waters

Scotland’s best-loved bird has flown into the history books by returning to her summer home for the 21st consecutive year.

Wildlife watchers at the Loch of the Lowes nature reserve were overjoyed when a close-up camera confirmed Lady, their resident female osprey, had defied the odds and survived another 6,000-mile round trip to make it back for another breeding season.

The veteran bird, who at 26 has lived three times longer than the average osprey and reared 46 chicks, spent yesterday preening her feathers and tidying her nest.

She briefly shared a perch with one of two other ospreys which have been circling the site, raising hopes of a reunion with Laird, her mate from last year, who helped her battle back from the brink of death by bringing fish to feed her and their two young when she fell seriously ill.

When staff waved her off from the Scottish Wildlife Trust reserve at Dunkeld on her journey to her winter grounds in west Africa last August, they feared they might have seen the last of her. But on Monday evening they were able to use the hidden camera which had beamed her battle for survival to 55,000 online wellwishers to confirm their grand old Lady was back.

Amazing bird :)

What a wonderful animal! She has lived well beyond the normal lifespan of ospreys.

Here is a photograph I was able to locate of Lady at guardian.co.uk

Thank you for the pic :tu:

She's a beautiful bird, and one of the world's oldest ospreys it says. There's also links to their "nest cam" in here for anyone who's interested to see -

Here is another picture of an osprey, who has generously given a lift to a fish who found swimming a little too slow....

Great pic, Cloudshill. Beatiful and savage at same time.

Ospreys are one of my faves.

Yes, it's really good. I'm still keeping an eye on it....fascinating stuff I think.

Maybe I should change title to "the chuffed thread" :D

She's still working on her nest, moving twigs etc in readiness for laying her eggs it looks like. Her mate arrives now and again, he's darker and bigger than she is. She also has her left leg ringed but I haven't seen anything on his.

It's looking quite possible she might have laid some. At last she's sitting on nest
