Talon Posted August 17, 2004 #1 Share Posted August 17, 2004 US TROOP WITHDRAWAL America is to withdraw 60-70,000 troops from Europe and Asia, President George Bush has announced. It is one of America's largest troop realignments since the end of the Cold War. Some of the troops will be moved to posts in Eastern Europe but it remains unclear if the overall number of US troops stationed overseas will drop. The White House said a significant portion will be sent home to America. More than 150,000 US soldiers are stationed in Afghanistan and Iraq. "The world has changed a great deal and our posture must change with it - for the sake of our military families, for the sake of our taxpayers, and so we can be more effective at projecting our strength and spreading freedom and peace," Mr Bush said. Mr Bush was speaking at the Veterans of Foreign Wars convention in Cincinnati. The president said the repositioning of forces would help save taxpayers' cash on maintaining bases overseas. "Our service members will have more time on the home front, and more predictability and fewer moves over a career," Mr Bush said. The plan, which has been years in the making, will likely be put into practice somewhere between 2006 and 2011, officials said. Apart from Afghanistan and Iraq, around 200,000 US troops are stationed abroad. Link
Fluffybunny Posted August 17, 2004 #2 Share Posted August 17, 2004 That is a good idea. I agree that we should be bringing more troops home to the US to serve their time. It is crazy that we have had troops stationed in Korea for 50 years... Now is a good time to consolidate our resources and get out of countries that no longer offer any logistical bonuses...
