Hitler's Bunker

Anyone today can enjoy a good walk in the forest near the central Ukrainian town of Vinnitsa. The tranquility of the area masks well what lurked there seven decades ago. The peaceful woods were once the site of a top-secret and highly-guarded Nazi command center -- the Werewolf bunker."It was a huge complex, which had everything Germany's command could need. There was an officer's club, a sauna, a gym, a swimming pool and barracks. Some sources claim it went seven floors underground. Above the ground there were several wooden houses including a casino," explained Svyatoslav Greben, director of the Museum of Glory in Vinnitsa. Adolf Hitler ordered the construction of the bunker to control the Nazi war-effort on the Eastern Front. It is believed the Nazi leader himself visited the bunker three times, with his personal swimming pool thought to be about the only thing to remain intact at the site. The rest of the huge complex was destroyed in March 1944.

Very, very cool stuff! I would LOVE to see some further investigation as I have read of many high technology discoveries of Nazi research and development.

I'd love to see it reopened.

Once again the Communists are against history. Uncover what was researched in that particular bunker could give us an idea of what was brought in the US via "paper-clip".

What does any of that have to do with werewolves? Were there actual Nazi werewolves in the bunker? Is that why it's classified? If it's so top secret why are people just walking all over the place on top of it? So many questions!

I don't know about the bunker itself, but Hitler started up a group called Wehrwolf when it became obvious that the Allies were going to close in on Germany. Basically they were a guerilla group intended to make any sort of Ally occupation impossible, and at the time, the Western Allies were genuinely concerned about the threat (I can't vouch for the Soviet side). In the end they were all hype and resulted in a handful of small time murders, contrary to what the Nazis thought, Germany really was done fighting.

So I don't know if that Werewolf had anything to do with this bunker in Ukraine, but it seemed that Hitler used the term when referring to defensive guerilla warfare. Maybe the high command just had a thing for weird nicknames. Maybe the Nazis wanted to utilise captured Ukrainian forces to launch a guerilla campaign against the oncoming Soviet onslaught to buy more time for the Germans to reinforce. That's my best theory. Maybe it was intended to be the main command centre for the Eastern campaign, or maybe had something to do with occupation, I guess we won't know until they open it this summer.

It'd be really interesting if the bunker is still intact. A lot of history could be down there.

Nice find! I can't believe it is still sealed after all these years?! I'd go in myself to see what history has hidden.

You are correct. For those interested, there are some great books about the Werewolf campaign following the end of WWII. They were mainly SS diehards and hardcore Hitler youth types and were quite disruptive in some areas.
