A Polish soldier has been killed and six others were injured when a booby-trapped car exploded next to their convoy near the Iraqi town of Hilla.

A reporter for Polish news channel TVN at Poland's nearby Babylon base said the condition of one of the injured is believed to be serious.

He said the six injured had been taken to hospitals in Baghdad and Karbala.

In Baghdad, one American soldier was killed and two others wounded after insurgents fired a rocket-propelled grenade at their vehicle.

The incident happened late on Friday in the south of the capital, the US military said.

In a separate attack, two American soldiers were killed and three wounded by a roadside bomb near the city of Samarra, some 60 miles north of Baghdad.

The attacks brought to 711 the number of US service men and women killed in action in Iraq since the US-led invasion in March last year.
