The world isn't ending

James Gabbard: Depending on when you’re reading this, the end is supposed to be coming May 21, 2011 at 6 PM Pacific Time…or that time has already passed and nothing has happened. Go figure. Now you’re probably thinking “Well of course not, it’ll end in 2012” but here’s a big hint to when it’s going to end: we don’t know, we won’t ever know, and the best guess is probably millions of years into the future when our sun explodes.

So why, then, are we so determined to figure out when the end times are? Why do so many people come to these conclusions of something happening? Let’s first look at the history of the end of the world.

Awesome article, very funny and well written and thought out.

Yes, it was a funny article and I get the gist of what he is saying and agree for the most part. However, it may not have been as thought out as you think. His remarks on the Mayan calendar were not entirely correct. The Mayan's did their calendar up to an end of a age, not just for planting and just ending it because they died. They ended it where they did because a new age was to begin afterwards. My feelings are that they didn't continue further because they were no where near that date so there was not really a need to. 'We'll do this up to the end of the age and then when we get closer to that date we'll do the next age', and so on. Unfortunately they all died out long before they were close enough to do another. There is a mystery about how they died out and so we take it too far and infer that they ended their calendar when they did because we felt they thought it was the end of the world. Not the world.. just an age.

Also, his thoughts on nuclear war are way off. Just because the cold war ended doesn't mean the threat is gone. The threat of it is just as bad as it ever was, but we choose to ignore it. Since Russia broke up so many nukes have gone missing that we don't know where they all are. Also Pakistan and India have almost gone to nukes at least twice in the last 5 years which could easily have escalated. ...and we haven't even touched on terrorists. We also have Korea to worry about.

So again, I agree with the gist of the article that doomsayers are always wrong. I wish he would have mentioned that the Bible clearly states that we will not know the day or the hour when the Lord returns. Not even the angels in heaven know that time, only the Father knows it. So if these religious nuts would just read their own good book they would know that they are wrong. Let's face it, they do it for one reason and one reason only. Money. They drain their believers of all their cash and then tomorrow they will come up with something like, "Oh sorry.. I had the date wrong because in 1277 we skipped a year..." or some crap like that.

Otherwise a very entertaining article.

We are?

I'd love some substantiation for the idea that we're destroying our world at an astounding rate.

But really, what I'm wondering is this:

Based upon your multiple references to "your world" in the above statement ( which I take to mean "our world", the one your readers are living in...); how does this differ from your world? Where is that world?

Just curious.

<_<

MID trolls now..?

Because you didn't understand a legitimate question, you use that to demonstrate that you don't know what trolling is?

The Hopi Indians believe in the five eras of mankind. We are presently at the end of the forth. The fifth is known as the Golden Age that will have no ending unlike the other four. So if the Maya also had this same belief in the five eras then they did not need to extend the calendar beyond 2012. They knew the world would be changed; end of story; end of calendar; end of an era; not end of world.

Yes, the bible clearly states that no one knows the end date. And it also clearly states that the meek will inherit the earth. Not be taken away from a distroyed world and placed into some invisible heavenly realm. The world with be transformed. A belief held in the bible and other religious text. But religious nuts do not wish to see this as it would undermine their belief that all 'good' people go to heaven and all bad are destined to everlasting burning.

And apocolypse means unveiling of things hidden from the majority who have been blinded by falsehoods and misconception. Nothing to do with destruction.

The majority of human kind are in for a rough ride (wars leading probably into one big war in the form of WW3 and everything else we are seeing today intensifying like the total collapse of the financial system) through a transition period but those with spiritual insight will fair well as there is nothing to be fearful. All the tormoil was foretold centuries ago as well as the end result.
