Portus Julius was the home base of the Imperial Roman western fleet, Pliny the Elder sent galleys from this port to evacuate the inhabitants of Pompeii and Herculaneum during the catastrophic 79 AD eruption of Mount Vesuvius. Pliny himself joined in the rescue effort, and died of sulfuric asphyxiation. Because of volcanic-driven liquefaction and the emptying of lava from subterranean chambers over the millennia, the port has submerged. 40°49'44.04" N 14°05'41.19" E

Over the past year myself and some family members have been visiting some of the local landmarks and ruins in our part of Ireland. Here's Castle Roche. It's a 13th century Norman fortress built by Lady Verdun. Local legend says that she promised to marry the architect who could design and build her the finest castle in the area and when the castle was completed, on their wedding night, she took him to the highest window in the castle to enjoy the view, and pushed him out the window to his death so that no-one would know the secrets of her fortress or be able to built a better one. It was eventually abandoned and left to ruin during the Cromwellian invasion of Ireland.

There is a younger church, about 5th century:

The funny part is that many elements of the old Greek temples were used.

Abba Paul patriarch of Ethiopia suggest Christianity before Christ.
