World's oceans move into 'extinction phase'

Still Waters

Recommended Posts

The next generation may lose the opportunity to swim over coral reefs or eat certain species of fish, scientists have warned, as the world's oceans move into a 'phase of extinction' due to human impacts such as over-fishing and climate change.

A preliminary report from an international panel of marine experts said that the condition of the world's seas was worsening more quickly than had been predicted.

The scientists, gathered for a workshop at Oxford University, warned that entire ecosystems, such as coral reefs, could be lost in a generation.

Already fish stocks are collapsing, leading to a risk of rising food prices and even starvation in some parts of the world.

The experts blamed the increased amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere for pushing up ocean temperatures, boosting algae so there is less oxygen and increasing acidity of the water.

The conditions are similar to every previous mass extinction event in the Earth's history.

How very alarmist. I think we all just need to chill out for a second (Get it? 'Chill' out? See what I did there? That's quite...well, um, okay, that wasn't all that funny.)

I have heard about the idea of fish supplies running out before but...really, is it that bad? Fish isn't unaffordable, and fishermen are still bringing in hauls just fine so I've seen. If there's a problem as bad as described in this article, I'm not seeing it.

Were there past advanced polluting civilizations?, or is this all a natural event?...

I actually read a different article that discussed how there always seemed to be a huge population explosion of algae before a lot of past mass extinctions. I think it was posted on this site, in fact. Perhaps it is a natural occurrence after all.

Maybe, I saw this article. Scientists Try to Have It Both Ways on Global-warming

So everyone's been concerned about the Earth warming up...but we should actually be worried about it cooling down? Is that what I just read?

Oh.

Don't worry, I'm sure some future government appointed 'climate specialist', will claim it's because of mandated 'green sacrifices', praise St. Gore, Lord of the 'f'lies...

:lol::tu:

But, of course we are not supposed to see the most dire of effects for about 100 years. This is weather and doesn't have anything to do with climate change.

Wait. What?

Those two totally go hand in hand. The climate dictates how the weather will be in a certain area. Likewise, the sun cooling down (if you want to call that "weather") will cause the climate to change to a cooler temperature and affect ecosystems. They're different things, yes, but they have everything to do with one another.

pfffff....

global warming, who cares. I'll just buy a big air conditioning system!

 That is the argument that we've heard over and over again from proponents of man made global warming. My area had four fairly heavy snows the last couple of years, when we normally don't see a flurry for years on end. I've been told that is weather and global warming is going to cause all kinds of unusual weather patterns.

Don't ask me... :hmm:

Really? Proponents say that too, eh? I don't see how anyone could deny it, though I agree that weather clearly has its flukes. My point is that they certainly don't have nothing to do with one another, as they certainly do. I actually don't support the notion of man-made global warming, but meh. Whatever.

Coral deaths alone would be considered a mass extinction, according to study chief author Alex Rogers of the University of Oxford. A single bleaching event in 1998 killed one-sixth of the world's tropical coral reefs.

I realize there are always people who don't give a crap because it won't affect us directly perhaps...but I don't know, it scares me. I'm afraid this is only the tip of the iceberg. Just a hunch. :hmm:

coral bleaching is normal. it is how corals adapt. they will repopulate to new conditions. corals have been around for 500 million years. in that time there have been many major ice ages ~ likely 5,000 major ice ages, with temperatures, co2 and "acidity" fluctuating wildly and quickly.

if corals were so fragile they would have died out long ago. think about it.

Ya because humans have been around for 500 million years. The industrial revolution and mans impact for 200 years means nothing. You beeter take another look and see what we are doing to the planet. It`s like saying we don`t believe in polution.

I have been through this before with Little Fish. Coral bleaching is a response to anomalously warm temps. In situation of occasional temperature spikes the coral generally recovers. In situation where temperatures rise very gradually they adapt. In situations where there is a series of spikes following each other in rapid succession coral die and do not return.

Little Fish lives in a land where all is hunky dory with the world and man is in perfect balance (to listen to his objection to every scientific report on the environment you would have to conclude this). *SNIP*

Little Fish - whats your opinion on banning DDT - just another part of the population control conspiracy :w00t:

Disagree with each other if you want, but there is no need from either side to characterize or antagonistically criticize or plain insult other posters; you can note a general stance if you feel that is necessary, though I do want posters to realize this forum is about the TOPICS, *NOT* other posters. -Para, Senior Moderator Staff

Whether you believe in man made global warming or not, you have to admit that we have a negative impact on most of our surroundings. Over fishing, shrimp trawling, and oil spills do not do the oceans any good. I would be extremely surprised if we did not suffer negative effects from these types of environmental missteps.

Would it really do us any harm to try to take care of this world and live more in balance with our natural surroundings, or should we just use the earth as a massive dumping ground and to hell with the consequences?

its all a bit dramatic. World's oceans move into 'extinction phase' the so called experts have to come out with this rubbish, their paid to come out with this sort of report - and coming out with the dramatic alarmist **** is a way to grab the headlines - justifies their funding. and keeps them in a 'job' imagine if they were to come out with the opposite view, half the funding would be stopped and god forbid half of them would have to get their hands dirty and get a proper job.

Proof? So we should just get rid of the experts and just pay no attention to our environment? Or do you just want scientists who will tell you what you want to hear?

And of course the oil companies that pay so called scientists to say there is no global warming have absolutely nothing to lose.....
