Still Waters Posted August 14, 2011 #1 Share Posted August 14, 2011 Australian National University scientists have successfully bent light beams around an object on a two dimensional metal surface, opening the door to faster and cheaper computer chips working with light. The international team, including three members from the Research School of Physics and Engineering at ANU, have successfully demonstrated that a tiny beam of light on a flat surface can be bent around an obstacle, and course-correct itself on the other side of that obstacle. It’s the world’s first two-dimensional demonstration of so-called ‘Airy beams’. hulabaloo Posted August 15, 2011 #2 Share Posted August 15, 2011 oh I don't know! doesn't light bend naturally around objects anyway?
Littlehawk Posted August 15, 2011 #3 Share Posted August 15, 2011 Technically, a beam of light goes straight ahead.... quantum physics are a different animal, however. My brain hurts.

FilterFish Posted August 15, 2011 #5 Share Posted August 15, 2011 oh I don't know! doesn't light bend naturally around objects anyway? Nope, not without huge gravitational assistance from nearby galaxies it doesn't.

Since804 Posted August 16, 2011 #9 Share Posted August 16, 2011 they already have cloaking... military tech is always years in advance of what's shown to the public. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tT-jgBk5IJg skip to 3:

Just look at the guys in the background, and the guys that run from left to right in another part. They have a similar distorting look with movement, but they're uniforms are darker. Are you thinking objectively or just repeating what others said in the youtube comments? If that were the case why is he the ONLY soldier that appears that way(not to mention he comes from a totally random direction all alone)? If it were distortion it would affect everyone's uniform that follows the same path since there are no variant desert camos that would make distortion affect one person and not the rest and the cameras position didn't change. Secondly, as the other soldiers traverse the same path, the shadow of separation between them and the wall/background is very obvious. The cloaked soldier has none of that.
