portraitartist Posted August 17, 2011 #3 Share Posted August 17, 2011 I think our guidelines for poverty is are probably very high compared to a lot of countries. If you really want to see poverty, cross the border at Brownsville TX and go over into Matamores(sp) Mexico and drive or walk for a while. It is really very sad for some of the children there. But that's ok. At least we'll have full prisons. We can create jobs with them. Business will be booming.

But there are very few countries in the world (and I'm not just talking about the US here) where you can be born poor and change that during your lifetime. Damrod Posted August 17, 2011 #7 Share Posted August 17, 2011 (edited) There is a difference in "poor" and "poverty stricken". Poor can mean having to cut back to the lean essentials to get by...poverty is not the same...poverty is hunger, homelessness and sickness... Things that every American should be ashamed of. The fact it exists in this advanced civilization is a sickening sign of the devaluation of human life and the embrace of selfishness, greed, vanity and gluttony. lightly Posted August 18, 2011 #9 Share Posted August 18, 2011 Generations of poor kids have grown up to be just fine. Those 1 in 5 will be okay too. Generations ago the majority of the population lived on the land and in small communities instead of big cities and suburbs. It was a different way of life, with people's basic needs closer at hand. People hunted, fished, bartered, had gardens, from which many people preserved foods, there were family farms everywhere, the produce from which was consumed locally for the most part. Many people who were monetarily poor, still had enough to eat. ( most of our wants were produce within this country , at least, too ) Now, the worse things get, the more dangerous and violent things will get. Desperate people do desperate things. I think one of the main difficulties with modern civilization and economies is the fact that people's basic needs keep moving farther away .
