CAR BOMB ATTACK ON IRAQ POLICE ACADEMY

At least seventeen people have died in a car bomb explosion outside an Iraqi police academy.

It happened in the northern city of Kirkuk as hundreds of trainees were leaving for the day.

The explosion - which left another 36 people injured - was detonated by a suicide bomber.

Four civilian vehicles and one police car were destroyed.

Guerrillas opposed to Iraq's interim government and the presence of foreign troops have repeatedly attacked Iraqi police stations, killing hundreds.

Elsewhere in northern Iraq, US-led forces backed by warplanes battled insurgents west of the city of Mosul.

At least 13 people were killed and 52 wounded in the clashes in the town of Tallafar, doctors and the US military said.

A US helicopter was forced to land after it was hit during the fighting, wounding two crew members, the military said.
