Domestic violence is now legal in Kansas

Domestic violence is now legal in Kansas's capital after the city changed the law - to save police time.

In a shocking move yesterday, Topeka's mayor and council repealed the ruling banning domestic violence and released 18 suspects from jail without charge.

Victims of domestic abuse appear to have become pawns in an argument between county and city politicians over who should pay for prosecutions.

Shawnlee County's district attorney last month handed over responsibility for prosecuting crimes including domestic abuse and battery to the city.

But Topeka's leaders say they cannot afford to provide services for domestic abuse victims as well as rent jail space from the county for suspects.

Domestic violence support groups were horrified at the move, saying that 'people could die while they're waiting to straighten this out'.

Whatdayaknow <_< ...States are repealing laws fought for by women for decades and the achievements to protect spousal abuse incidents are disappearing, a pandora's box has been opened...and I don't like where this is going, like violent crime is going to become less criminal (demoted from felony to misdemeanor) and all crimes currently are punishable as minor offenses could be legalized. :unsure2:

Kansas may end up pressuring the US supreme court to repeal the Brown vs. state board of education then. Think about it: aging racists living under a cave for half a century comes out and declared themselves "Libertarians" instead of "Conservatives", and demand the end of the civil rights era's accomplishments in state and federal anti-discrimination laws..."states rights" are back.

In California, over 90 to 95% of the laws need to be repealed, like the mandatory school attendance law for minors under age 16 and minors under 18 have to wear a helmet while riding on a bicycle and the state constitution refuses to legalize child divorce: at-will self-emancipation of pre-teens and those aged 13 to 17 - teenagers to escape from dysfunctional parents or difficult family situations.

An anti-immigrant yet Progressive environmentalist group in California "legally" expelled 4 pregnant women of color from their meetings...because they physically symbolized global overpopulation.

Well given that this is the Daily Fail let's look for some creditable sources. Oh look the law was only repealed in one city that appears to be in debate with one county over costs, not police time. Domestic violence is still illegal in Kansas. A bad situation no doubt but nothing what the Fail's headline (and this thread's title) is suggesting.

Time to break out the wife beaters, now that the law can't protect them it's time to put these women and children(sometimes husbands I guess) back in their place!

It isn't just wife beating.. sometimes wives hit husbands too. And domestic violence includes more than just spousal violence, it also covers other partnerships and can cover things like sibling violence, and parent/adult child violence.

A sad point in this, it that it is being used as a budgeting chip. They decided to not prosecute all misdemeanor cases, the city is hoping that domestic violence will be the key that people will object to most, and thus get the funding they need.

I still think it's a sad and sorry thing. Violence is wrong, and people need to be protected.

Human nature is to blame , people marry or move in together for all the wrong reasons .... Nothing happens in life without a motive , Is it because their expectations are too high ? Is it related to Jealousy ? Is it a Neuroses based on a need to put someone down , an inferiority complex ?

We've all met or worked with that person who has to act out his superiority by putting every one down , and I think they enjoy doing that .... Or is it just a case of Immaturity ?

Could it be something passed down through generations starting way back when we were all Cave Dwellers , true uncivilized hermits ? May be we aren't as civilized as we think ?

May be the whole marriage law wants rewriting ?

It is the fault of the voters who elected those conservative Tea Party red necks last year and now they are paying the price. All over the country they are trying to pass anti-abortion laws and other legislation to hurt women. Here in Florida a woman cannot have an abortion unless she can prove she was raped. IF she gets throough that part the she has to shell out $300 for sonogram and listen to lecture from one of those crazy Christains about the evils of abortion. If she gets through that part then her insurance cannot pay for the abortion.

KANSAS CITY, Kan | Wed Oct 12, 2011 10:22pm EDT

I'm curious if they actually thought they could get away with it.

in this day and age of greed driven stupidity nothing surprises me anymore. there is no moral line they wont cross. no dark pit they wont happily jump into.

They likely thought the other party would be the target of the public outrage instead of them.
