The gap between earnings by the rich and the poor is widening in almost all OECD countries — including Canada, where the top 10 per cent of Canadians earns 10 times more than the bottom 10 per cent.

The Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development says the average income of the top 10 per cent of Canadians in 2008 was $103,500 — 10 times higher than those by the bottom 10 per cent, who had an average income of $10,260.In the early 1990s, that ratio was at 8-1.

We should never envy the wealthy , because it all comes down to what experiences we asked for in this life , yes you can ask for that experience (wealth) too , however , there's always a catch , being wealthy is an enormous test of one character , and this is where 99.9% of wealthy people fail , the problem as I see it is , so many people just don't understand how the system works (divine law) , while in the afterlife they/we do understand but after birth all understanding goes out the window and as the money rolls in 'Freewill' thinking takes over .

While we're in Spirit , the afterlife , we discuss in full what experiences we want and need in each reincarnation , the spirits that we have this discussion with are in fact 'Gods Lieutenants' also known as our 'Spirit Guides' , part of their job is to keep a record of everything we do , nothing goes unnoticed , they follow us everywhere and see everything , if we've asked for great wealth the discussion is , what are our intentions for all that money ? We only need enough to provide food , shelter , clothing , and maybe a little comfort for our family , and , this is where the test of character comes in .

And this should make you chuckle , at birth our memory is wiped ........ Once you understand the concept of what's just happened then you can appreciate the humor of the situation . The wealthy are now on their own , the correct thing to do is to talk to their spirit guides and ask for guidance , the percentage that actually do that would be miniscule , what the wealthy do with their wealth is history , and so 99.9% of that fraternity fail the test .... Are you now asking what is the price of failure ? ........ The answer is as plain as the nose on your face , a lifetime of abject poverty .

The gap between rich and poor will always increase as long as there is inflation. Simple economics. If someone earn $100,000 and someone earning $10,000 both get a 3% pay increase to offset inflation their incomes become $103,000 and $10,300 respectively. Hence an increase income difference of $1700.

In a recession the income gap can increase even further with unemployment or limited employment mostly effecting the bottom 10%.

So now $103K a year is considered "wealthy" in Canada.

So basically people who have jobs have higher income than those who don't.

Imagine that.

I was thinking the same thing. I thought the cost of living was higher in Canada and $100k a year would be middle class where it is upper middle class here.

Not sure of late, but it used to be pretty economical to go to Canada from the US.

As to this article, as I've said before, we need to stop playing the percentage game and actually put real income figure in the mix.

Everyone seems to love to rail against the 1%, 5%, 10%, etc. but what most folks don't realize is that you don't have to go too far down that scale before you get to average, middle class, working people. If you're making $75-$100K a year, many find it hard to believe that they're in some of the top income brackets in the US - but they are.
