Woolly Mammoth could be cloned by 2016

A new discovery has lead to promise of Wooly Mammoth clone by 2016. I know we have had this discussion before and I am on the fence on this one. Although, it would be cool to see I don't like this tech at all. I feel in our hands it could be an accident waiting to happen. The tech I mean. I don't feel we are responsible enough. JMO

The key to cloning the woolly mammoth is to replace the nuclei of egg cells from an elephant with those extracted from the mammoth's bone marrow cells. Doing this, according to the researchers, can result in embryos with mammoth DNA. That's actually been known for a while.

Elephants are having a hard time already with people invading their territory why bring another even larger animal into the picture.  I think their time would be better spent trying to figure out how to keep animals on the endangered species list from becoming extinct.  I have to admit it would be nice to see one of those magnificent creatures but their time has come and gone. <br>

There shouldn't be any problems with competition between elephants and mammoths. Elephants are adapted to hot climates and mammoths to cold ones. They'd probably never see each other.

Very cool. I'm glad I'm alive to see something this extraordinary happen.

Can you imagine zoo's of cloned "ancient" animals?

When will science grow up. Why do they have to make super deadly viruses, genetically engineer things, and clone things. Especially extinct animals. Why can't people think - maybe there is a reason they are not here. Nature and the universe exists in a delicate balance - STOP **EDIT** WITH IT!

**Profanity filters are there for a reason, Swadwa.**

Why? WHY?!! WTH is so wrong with people that they are willing to do something like this? The money that would be used for it could easily be applied to curing cancer... or the common cold. **EDIT**

**Don't make it personal, Crypto.**

Heu and you know that because ???? Mammoths went extinct in the last ice age according to paleontologists.

This isnt going to be bird like reptiles cloned with frog DNA. This is basically a wooly Elephant.

Nature made humans this smart for a reason.....we ARE nature.

People seem to believe we live outside of it.

I understand there are risks but I see nothing wrong with doing this.

Brilliant, we should invest more money into this type of thing. Less money for war then. Plus Everyone wants to know what they taste like!

They shouldn't do this. Jurrasic Park didn't work out so well and neither will Pleistocene Park.

I agree w/kwin, Just how many elephants will have to die. Once they take this step what will their nest step be? I'm truly scared for the elephant. "you can't kill just one"

lol, really? No elephants have to die for this. Absolutely none. Your fears are unfounded.

And the rest of that garbage about not doing this for vague and unspecified reasons, well, it really doesn't makes sense at all to fear this. There is not ONE good reason not to do this.

Doing this will be a small restoration of the wildlife of the world that we destroyed on our advance to civilization. We screwed up most of the megafauna of the "ice age". Why is trying to add bits of the ecosystem that we've removed back in somehow wrong?
