Are these figures swayed by young teen girls that have 'consensual' sex with an older boy but it is still classed as statutory rape? Having age of consent at eighteen seems a bit draconian, should be around 16. Depends on the girl. There should be more education on relationship building and life skills, not so much emphasis on teaching the basic biological side of sex. Also the media has a lot to answer for. Sex is literately rammed down peoples throats these days.

Ha! Ha! So many dirty jokes can be derived from his statement... so many... *sigh!*

I agree. This whole "girls aren't mature enough at that age" stuff is inaccurate, in my humble opinion. But, like you said, it depends on the individual. I was much more mature as a teenager than I am now.

I believe it also depends on the state, however. I was 17 and in a relationship with a much older guy (still with him, actually) and not only was it perfectly fine, but the state actually transferred custody of me to him when my mother went batpoop crazy. Not sure how it would have worked out if I had been 16, but I can hardly see where that one year made a difference as far as my mental state went.

Personally I don't think teenage girls or boys are ready for sexual relationships. I wish they would wait until they were at least 20 but of course they won't. Too much advertising of it all around us.

Just once I would like to see a story of Young , good looking girls forcing 50 year old men to engage in this behavior! And the LAW'S that would be made to save these poor , abused individuals!

Oh well, back to reality!

The article says that 1 in 5 women are raped.

Sorry, but I find that rather hard to believe. No way it's that many.

I've heard similar statistics as well. Sadly, I don't really find it all that difficult to believe though. Among the women I know about a quarter of them have been raped at some point in their lives. However, it's generally not by some stranger in a dark alley, but rather by ex boyfriends/husbands or friends.

I agree. If I figure out how to convey that to a teenager in the midsts of puberty effectively in our current social enviroment; I'll be sure to let you know. If you figure it out first please let me know.

One in five does sound like allot to me; but its also not something people talk about openly. Also not everyone agrees on what is rape and what isn't. Surveys often define it in broadest terms possible.

While I agree that the term 'rape' may not be totally accurate for situations involving teenagers and consent issues, I still think that a very large number of women are forced into having sex against their will (which is what 'rape' really is IMO). I'm not even sure if the numbers can be correctly collected...often the victims take it to their graves (or at least only tell their close friends).

If people actually read the report, they corrected for teenager consent issues. This wasn't a survey about parents pressing charges for statutory rape. Rape is being forced to engage in sexual acts against ones will. That doesn't necessarily mean limited to penetrative sex.

This numbers for women are accurate and have been confirmed in numerous studies. The numbers for men are low, its hard to get me, even on a phone survey, to admit to being raped because of the social stigmata associated with it. Notice that the incidence of men in the report being forced to penetrate another is higher than reporting for men being forcibly penetrated themselves---not likely.

I'm sure the number is "hard" to believe for many rape apologists though. "She was drunk and asking for" and other such common victim-blame mentalities unfortunately permeate our society.

Speaking of which, I'm glad there haven't been any rape apologists here yet. Whenever this topic gets discussed, it's usually a can of worms ("they're just lying", "they shouldn't dress like ****s", "there's no such thing as marital rape"). I'm glad everyone is taking the statistics seriously.

It also reminded me of this study here. Can you guess which of these statements come from lad mags and which come from rapists justifying rape? Answers at the bottom:

1. There's a certain way you can tell that a girl wants to have sex . . . The way they dress, they flaunt themselves.

2. Some girls walk around in short-shorts . . . showing their body off . . . It just starts a man thinking that if he gets something like that, what can he do with it?

3. A girl may like *spam filter* because it makes her feel incredibly naughty and she likes feeling like a dirty ****. If this is the case, you can try all sorts of humiliating acts to help live out her filthy fantasy.

4. Mascara running down the cheeks means they've just been crying, and it was probably your fault . . . but you can cheer up the miserable beauty with a bit of the old in and out.

5. What burns me up sometimes about girls is dick-teasers. They lead a man on and then shut him off right there.

6. Filthy talk can be such a turn on for a girl . . . no one wants to be shagged by a mouse . . . A few compliments won't do any harm either . . . ‘I bet you want it from behind you dirty whore' . . .

7. You know girls in general are all right. But some of them are b****es . . . The b****es are the type that . . . need to have it stuffed to them hard and heavy.

8. Escorts . . . they know exactly how to turn a man on. I've given up on girlfriends. They don't know how to satisfy me, but escorts do.

9. You'll find most girls will be reluctant about going to bed with somebody or crawling in the back seat of a car . . . But you can usually seduce them, and they'll do it willingly.

10. There's nothing quite like a woman standing in the dock accused of murder in a sex game gone wrong . . . The possibility of murder does bring a certain frisson to the bedroom.

11. Girls ask for it by wearing these mini-skirts and hotpants . . . they're just displaying their body . . . Whether they realise it or not they're saying, ‘Hey, I've got a beautiful body, and it's yours if you want it.'

12. You do not want to be caught red-handed . . . go and smash her on a park bench. That used to be my trick.

13. Some women are domineering, but I think it's more or less the man who should put his foot down. The man is supposed to be the man. If he acts the man, the woman won't be domineering.

14. I think if a law is passed, there should be a dress code . . . When girls dress in those short skirts and things like that, they're just asking for it.

15. Girls love being tied up . . . it gives them the chance to be the helpless victim.

16. I think girls are like plasticine, if you warm them up you can do anything you want with them.

Answers. 1. Rapist, 2. Rapist, 3. Lad mag, 4. Lad mag, 5. Rapist, 6. Lad mag, 7. Rapist, 8. Lad mag, 9. Rapist, 10. Lad mag, 11. Rapist, 12. Lad mag, 13. Rapist, 14. Rapist, 15. Lad mag, 16. Lad mag

This is true. And a great deal of the time it is not reported. So the numbers may be higher. I believe the it should be at least 2 out of 5.

Edit to say I guess I should have read the rest of the thread before commenting.
