Just for comparison: 

I’m writing a book about how the catholic church used liturgical drama as a political tool (over other, competing christian churches) about the year 1000 CE. One of my case studies looks at the Visigothic Arian church based in northern Spain. Not a lot of people know about this church and its history, so I had to do proper, actual research. 
 

I started with a history of the Gothic people. I knew from my preliminary research a good starting place would be Wolfram’s History of the Goths, so I read that. I had to keep Wikipedia open almost constantly to learn/relearn the Eastern European geography and late Roman history (Where’s the Tisza River basin? What’s a Dobruja? When was Valens emperor?) From that general research, I was able to find a book specifically on the Spanish Visigothic kingdom, Collins’ Visigothic Spain. Because it was a more recent text (2004 versus 1970s), I could see where new research had been done and could see some of the pros and cons of Wolfram’s text. Reading Collins work also confirmed the two period sources used by both authors, namely the annals of Paulus Orosius and Hydatius. So I read them — and was able to note their shortcomings. Hydatius believed Jesus was coming back in just a few years, and for him, the warfare, hunger and strife the Visigoths brought with them was proof of the end of the world. Maybe his opinions might not be accurate.

Then — and only then — was I able to go in and write my own chapter of new work. It involved reading, critically, hundreds of pages, evaluating others’ work, and following leads to new texts. And this was after hundreds of hours of preliminary research to know the general subject area. 
 

So, yeah, when people like docy call skimming one text repeatedly or spending five or ten minutes Googling one specific term or parroting a single author uncritically “research,” I don’t agree.

I physically bushwacked swamps looking for open thermokarst basins (Carolina Bays) to slug through and take samples out of. I sifted through thousand of pieces of FCR and dug through massive beds of it looking for traces of Nelumbo lutea. I froze and busted my ass in Siberia and froze and cooked in Xinjiang. I beat apart hundreds of pounds of quartzite, pecked hundreds of stones. Dug thorough hundreds of dig reports and photographed hundreds of artifacts. 

I hate armchair "archaeologists?".

Why should I suffer such inconvenient situations when you have been more than willing to endure such conditions?

Far better (imho) to recline comfortably in an armchair with a nice single malt to hand and peruse the data others have diligently collected.

1) You are again reciting the typical fringe mantra. The study (and generation) of credible research does not constitute "brainwashing" and only one unfamiliar with actual research would make such a blatantly incorrect statement.

2) While such media sources as the non-History Channel and YouTube have generated some amount of pseudo-scientific fluff, one would be ill-advised to consider the volume of such fluff as being of real-world significance.

3) The fringe has a rather poor record of successfully "challenging" serious research from any period.

4) When dealing with deeper time, there are indeed professional and scholarly debates regarding certain matters. Unfortunately for the fringe elements, their various fantasies do not even enter into the realm of serious discourse. Ask yourself a critical question: If the arguments of these fringe fantasists were indeed so profound and well documented, why are their positions not published in credible peer-review journals. The answer is quite simple...

In this spirit might I suggest we use "Fluid and Unconvincing but Creative and Keen Weakly-Intellectual Theory" to describe those suggestions that lack the most basic rudiments of plausibility? ²

Colonel Vyse knew the Khufu (Suphis) cartouche while he was on the ground at Giza in 1837– he draws it in his private journal several times and even refers to it as Suphis.
