Iran's parliamentary elections on Friday are shaping up as a contest by proxy between President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, who seeks public endorsement of his efforts to wield broad authority, and Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who has struggled to keep his populist president in check.

I can't believe I want Ahmadinejad to win something.

The puppet vs. the puppet master. Who knew something this would happen?

However, to be honest, I don't think the world would be a better place with either outcome.

Yawn, like parliamentary elections actually are an indication that Iran is a democracy. The winners as well as any legislation the parliament passes have to be approved by an appointed body called the "Guardian Council", half of whose members are appointed by the "Supreme Leader" and the other half elected by the head of the Judiciary who is appointed by the Supreme Leader. So let's see, there's the Supreme Leader, the President who is elected but whose candidacy must have been approved by the Guardian Council before he is allowed to run, the fake Parliament, the Guardian Council, the Expediency Council which is an advisory body to the Supreme Leader and whose members are appointed by him, the Assembly of Experts whose members are elected but whose candidacy must first be approved by the Guardian Council, and the Judiciary whose head is appointed by the Supreme Leader. The Supreme Leader and Guardian Council are really the only bodies that have any power, while the parliament is basically a token democratic and powerless body. Any signs of democratic process in Iran are just mirages. It's a backwards primitive authoritarian theocratic state and probably always will be until it's nuked out of existence like it should be.

Even if A'jad did develop an independent following he still ultimately answers to the goons in the robes. If he steps out of line they could accuse him of molesting collies or dressing up in things that make him feel pretty. He'd be on the way to a gallows in a heartbeat. :w00t:
