Jan. 28 — Six thousand years ago, the British likely were enjoying butter, cheese, yogurt and other dairy products, according to a team of researchers that has found the earliest direct evidence for the production of dairy-based foods in the U.K.

The evidence consists of broken dirty dishes collected from throughout England. Potsherds at the various sites contained fatty residues, at first believed to be meat remains. But further analysis revealed that the fats were from dairy products, not meat.
