3pm Update:

We are still getting great veiws of the wee chicks beak as it slowly makes its way into the world. It is totally NORMAL for the hatching process to take anything up to 24hrs- in fact it is crucial that it happens slowly so the chick has time to detact itself from the eggs inner membrane safely as it dries out.

We are unusally lucky to have such great close up cameras to detect this very early stage of hatching- at most nests these tiny signs are invisible and the hatching only becomes apparent at the very end stage.

The first hole in the shell is crucial for allowing oxegen in and will gradually widen , before the egg cracks around to release the chick. Some people have asked if it will be ok as it isn’t being fed- the chick will survive this first 24hr period, as it did incubation- nourished by the nutrients stored in the yolk sack in the egg- one of natures cleverest designs.

Another update -

Stop Press: things progressed very quickly this evening and by about 6.30pm it was obvious this wee chick was on the home straight: the whole top of the egg came off and it pushed its way into the world at 7.12pm. Welcome to the world little osprey!

It's night time now and all I can see is Lady sleeping on the nest. I'll look again tomorrow and see if I can see the new chick. :)

Latest news -

Our hopes for a second osprey chick for our Loch of the Lowes nest this season have all but faded now and it looks like our wee chick will be a brood of one. Thursday is day 44 for the first egg, and day 41 for the third egg, and it now seems very unlikely that either will hatch ( normal incubation is between 35 and 40 days) .

Both eggs however, now appear to be damaged, with cracks etc so it will be interesting to see if the female tolerate their presence in the nest much longer. At the moment she is continuing to brood these eggs, but she will eventually give up realising they are not viable ( though last year that took 70 days!).

It's a month old tomorrow, the blog says.

I try and have a quick look most days to keep up with its progress and the blog is very useful to find out what's been happening too. The reason this chick is doing so well is because it was the only one that hatched and so is getting all the fish to eat. Greedy wee thing!

Oh correction...that blog entry was yesterday so today is the chick's birthday!
