Quake Expert: Earth Cracking Up

A leading earthquake scientist has warned that the planet could be cracking up after a series of massive quakes in just 48 hours.

I don't know what to make of this or if there's any truth to this ?

but this is who this guy is.

Didn't they have a quake off the coast of Oregon on the same day?

According to Marmureanu, there is no relation between the quakes that shook the planet during the last two days, but what happened in Indonesia came as a surprise that cannot be explained by science. “Statistics show that, in this region of Asia, there is one big earthquake every 500 years, roughly. However, since 2004, there already were three quakes with magnitudes above 8, which is out of seismological statistics. Something is wrong! There are too many big quakes in the Indonesian area,” Marmureanu warns.

Karlis posted this today, in the Science & Technology forum:

Scientists had expected Indonesia quake

Karnataka,Crime/Disaster/Accident,Science/Tech, Thu, 12 Apr 2012 IANS

Bangalore, April 12 (IANS) Scientists had been expecting Wednesday's great earthquake off Sumatra but it occurred a little sooner, according to Arun Bapat, an Indian seismologist in Pune.

Bapat is one of the associate scientists of the newly formed International Earthquake and Volcano Prediction Center (IEVPC) based in Orlando, Florida in the United States.

Asked why the IEVPC failed to predict Wednesday's 8.6 Richter earthquake that triggered tsunami fears in Indian Ocean countries, Bapat said they did suspect an impending quake on April 5 itself.

In an email to IANS Bapat said: "We were expecting occurrence of a large magnitude earthquake in Indonesia.... We were debating it and the expected time window was about 10 to 15 days." But it has occurred earlier, he said.

Bapat said he sensed the possible occurrence of the earthquake first on March 21 itself after having observed the satellite picture of the Total Electron Content (TEC). The TEC is the total number of electrons present between any two points in the Earth's ionosphere and is measured as the number of electrons per square meter.

(...)

According to Bapat, the IEVPC warned earlier this week that a major earthquake and possible tsunami will strike Kamchatka Peninsula of Russia between now and the end of June 2012.

Aye, only thing cracking up is Gheorghe Marmureanu - assuming he hasn't been misquoted out of context?

I wonder if "statistically, there should be one big earthquake in this part of Asia every 500 years" should read "every 50 years"? Which would, at least, more closely match the scanty data available on wikipedia.

I notice that Abramelen's link include the same story with out the sensationalized headline... and I am thinking that the earth 'cracking up' was created by a journalist or editor and not something the scientist interviewed actually claimed.

I find that site a right pain since they changed the format..they should have left it alone

Heres a site that gives updated TEC maps that might be useful for anticipating future earthquake locations;

http://iono.jpl.nasa.gov/

TEC or total electron count increases in the area where a quake is about to happen.....maybe worth looking into..

I do not see anything stating such on the linked site.
