Maurice Sendak, the beloved children's author of "Where the Wild Things Are," has passed away, according to The New York Times. He was 83.

He died Tuesday in Danbury, Connecticut, just 10 miles from his home in Ridgefield, Conn. His editor Michael di Capua tells the Times the cause of death was complications from a recent stroke.

"Where the Wild Things Are" was first published in 1963 when Sendak was just 34 years old. His most famous work was just 338 words long, telling the story of a boy named Max who was sent to his room with no dinner and rebelled in his imagination by running away to an island with beasts who "roared their terrible roars and gnashed their terrible teeth." After Max's "wild rumpus," however, he returns home to find "his supper waiting for him."

That's too bad. I'll wear my monster onesie to bed tonight in his memory.
