Still Waters Posted May 25, 2012 #1 Share Posted May 25, 2012 Most of us will have felt the pain of a bee sting. Luckily most of us will have avoided the dreaded pain of a tarantula hawk or a fire ant.Justin Schmidt felt all three of these - and 147 other horrible, burning sensations - after a dedicated life-long career devoted to insects. On numerous fieldwork trips, The University of Arizona entomologist would find himself digging up living colonies of creatures, who in turn were not happy with this destructive human scooping them into bags - and promptly sank their fangs, stingers or pincers into him. Still, no pain, no gain, and Schmidt turned his experiences into the Schmidt Sting Pain Index, ranking 78 species in a list which, while subjective, was put together by the man who must surely know best, ranking their pain on a scale of 1 to 4. http://www.dailymail...es-science.html
+and-then Posted May 25, 2012 #2 Share Posted May 25, 2012 Reminds me of an episode of Gilligan's Island. The Professor allowed himself to be bitten by a fly thought to be deadly. Mr Howell said : OH!!!! An eggheaded nut to the very end!! Sorry if the Gilligan's Island reference doesn't make sense...I grew up on reruns....

little_dreamer Posted May 25, 2012 #4 Share Posted May 25, 2012 I've only had the fire ant and some other ant bites. I guess if the Japanese giant hornet bites, you're just - dead. He also didn't list any spider bites.

Timothy Posted May 26, 2012 #6 Share Posted May 26, 2012 (edited) Hope he had no allergies... I guess if the Japanese giant hornet bites, you're just - dead. It's not that bad! You'll still have a decent chance little_dreamer! Without any treatment, possible death. Edited May 26, 2012 by Timonthy
Michelle Posted May 26, 2012 #7 Share Posted May 26, 2012 I don't know how many times I've been stung by yellow jackets and honeybees...I never thought they were that bad. I stop what I'm doing, pull out the stinger and go on my way. Meh, now I'm not so worried about the rest of the stingy things around here.

actower Posted May 27, 2012 #14 Share Posted May 27, 2012 I got stung on the lower lip by a yellow jacket. It hurt like hell and I looked like the elephant man for a while. By far the worst was an assassin bug.
Englishgent Posted May 27, 2012 #15 Share Posted May 27, 2012 I think it all depends on the person's pain threshold and also where on the body they have been stung. My daughter, when she was ten years old, was stung 18 times by wasps (yellow jackets) after inadvertantly venturing too close to a nest. She cried, obviously, but within an hour she was up and running around again. Had it been me I would have died! lol The hornets here in Thailand are huge and when I first came over here I would run a mile whenever I saw one. Now, I dont bother because they are not like the European wasps that just attack you for looking at them. These hornets leave you alone

Englishgent Posted May 27, 2012 #17 Share Posted May 27, 2012 Centipedes can inflict some pretty horrific wounds. You are right. The 12 inch long centipedes here are best avoided. Certainly not something one would play around with, unlike like the giant millipedes lol

They were portrayed in the 2005 King Kong Movie. Kaikou Posted May 27, 2012 #21 Share Posted May 27, 2012 I've been lucky enough not to get stung by even a Bee. Oh wait. Bet I've jinxed that now haven't I?
+DieChecker Posted May 27, 2012 #22 Share Posted May 27, 2012 The most painful area I've been stung by a yellow jacket is between the fingers. Been stung by one of those black hornets before also and that was pretty painful. Bees really hurt for a moment and then, as long as you get the stinger out, go away pretty fast. I wonder if by the time he got all his testing done if he did not have some nerve damage? Kind of like if a person goes wine tasting, by the time you get to the 20th type, you're probably not so good a judge anymore. It could be mad dog by that time and you'd go, "yum". ThickasaBrick Posted May 27, 2012 #23 Share Posted May 27, 2012 If yellow jackets are among the worst, I have been there and done that hundreds of times. Those blueish wasps are much worse, imo.
