Earth's Core:The Enigma 1,800 Miles Below Us

Still Waters

Recommended Posts

Geologists have long known that Earth’s core, some 1,800 miles beneath our feet, is a dense, chemically doped ball of iron roughly the size of Mars and every bit as alien.

It’s a place where pressures bear down with the weight of 3.5 million atmospheres, like 3.5 million skies falling at once on your head, and where temperatures reach 10,000 degrees Fahrenheit — as hot as the surface of the Sun.

It’s a place where the term “ironclad agreement” has no meaning, since iron can’t even agree with itself on what form to take. It’s a fluid, it’s a solid, it’s twisting and spiraling like liquid confetti.

It will be quite an engineering feat to drill down there.

either molten lava is down there or hell. take your pick. hell or lava?

depends on your definition of hell. But the bible hell sounds alot like it -eternal fire and burning in hell...so who knows? ;) Maybe satan has a lava spa down there.

Perhaps this discussion should go in the religion forum.

religion smelligion, what about if the world was like a giant geode, gravity forcing the mass outwards crystaline innards.Or a central heat source that has bubbled away an inner-tube,if you like,a big old space where the real business of running earth goes on.Oblivious to the land of Nod(the surface).Infact,my best guess is we are little more than a conservation project up here on the surface.

I suggest you all watch a dr who episode called 'inferno' In it scientists tried to drill to the core looking for a new fuel. In one reality they drilled through the core and destroyed the planet. in the other. they stopped just in time
