Lebanon 'thwarts al-Qaeda plot'

The Lebanese government says it has arrested the leader and some members of an al-Qaeda cell, thwarting an attack on Italy's embassy in Beirut.

Three hundred kilos (660 lbs) of explosives are said to have been recovered following a joint Italian, Syrian and Lebanese operation.

Interior Minister Elias Murr said the group had received funds from Europe.

The group is also said to have been planning to attack Ukrainian and Lebanese targets in Beirut.

Mr Murr said the leaders of the plot were Ahmed Salim Mikati and Ismail Mohammed al-Khatib, both Lebanese.

He said eight Lebanese and Palestinian accomplices were also arrested.

Lebanon's Prosecutor General Adnan Adoum said the leaders "had links to al-Qaeda".

Mr Murr told a news conference that al-Khatib "is an al-Qaeda operative... his role was to recruit fundamentalist youth to carry out operations against coalition forces in Iraq".

He said the group was also planning to assassinate employees working in Western embassies in Lebanon.

The Italian Defence Minister, Antonio Martino, issued a statement praising Italian military intelligence, and thanking the Lebanese and Syrian security services for their co-operation.

Groups linked to al-Qaeda have issued threats against Italy and killed Italian hostages in Iraq in response to the Italian government's support for the US-led war in Iraq.

Lebanon should be freed from illegal Syrian and Iranian occupation!

It was once, together with Israel, one of the only two democracies in the middle-east.

Then the PLO caused a civil war between the muslims and christians, then the Syrians and Iranians invaded in favour of the Islamists mad.gif, and together with the PLO, they destroyed that country and turned it into the biggest terrorist harbour in world.

Lebanon does have huge problems with terrorism, and it is mostly due to the fact that they are not in a position to be able to effectively stand up to Syria.

If this report posted by Talon is true, this is yet another victory in the war on terror provided by a foriegn country.

Why wouldn't be true, none-US countries have been making victories over terrorism for decades. The US entering the war is actually a rather resent thing.

They should be liberated mad.gif

Back then, in the 70s and early 80s, Israel entered Lebanon in order to stop the PLO from firing SCUD and Katyusha missiles to Israel northern cities.

We helped the Christians there against the Islamists, and also many non-radical muslims joined.

We and them already won the war, and the new moderate Lebanese government signed peace treaty with Israel, but then Iranian-backed terrorists assasinated the PM, and that government went into exile (it is now located in Jerusalem).

Because of Soviet pressure, we had to widraw to southern Lebanon.

Then Syria and Iran entered Beirut and put a puppet government to rule Lebanon, which ofcourse destroyed that beautiful country, and made it into the terrorists and illegal drug nest that it is today disgust.gif...

Talon you`ve got a good point there, its really only a recent development where the americand have trully committed to the fight on terror, other countries have experienced this for countless years and have fought it continually and have had major victories, but is it a war that can ever be won?!

No, or at least not in the foreseeable future (because we really have no idea what will happen in 200 years), but this has been with us since the begining of the century, and has only escelated, it'll continue. There's always someone else with greievences ready to kill for them.

Al-Qaeda suspect dies in Lebanon

A suspected al-Qaeda leader arrested in Lebanon last week has died of a heart attack, officials say.

Ismail Mohammed al-Khatib was among 10 people held after security forces said they foiled an attack against the Italian embassy in Beirut.

He was rushed to hospital from jail - apparently suffering from chest pains - where doctors were unable to save him, hospital officials said.

Lebanese security officials confirmed Khatib's death of a heart attack.

Interior Minister Elias Murr said Khatib's group had received funds from Europe and planned to send a vehicle packed with 300 kg (660 lbs) of explosives into the Italian embassy.

The explosives were said to have been recovered from the group following a joint Italian, Syrian and Lebanese operation.

There were also plans to assassinate foreign diplomats and target security facilities, officials said.

Khatib's own role in the group had been "to recruit fundamentalist youth to carry out operations against coalition forces in Iraq", Mr Murr told a news conference last week.

A heart attack is kind of a cop out... I was thinking the same thing.

Lebanon 'militant's' angry burial

Hundreds of people have gathered for an alleged al-Qaeda leader's funeral in his hometown in eastern Lebanon.

Relatives angrily denied that Ismail Khatib belonged to the Islamic militant group and accused the authorities of killing him while in police custody.

"He died under torture... electric shocks, beaten and cigarettes put out on his body," said Mr Khatib's father.

He died on Monday in hospital from what officials said was a massive heart attack a week after being arrested.

Prosecutors had accused Mr Khatib of involvement in a plot to bomb the embassies of Italy and Ukraine, assassinate Western diplomats and attack security facilities.

Relatives and supporters in Majdal Anjar blamed the government for his death and initially refused to receive his body for burial.

On Wednesday more than 1,000 mourners paraded the white-shrouded body through the town.

Relatives pointed to cuts and bruises on the corpse that they said were signs of his being tortured.

Local cleric Sheikh Maher Hammoud said it was a crime against the judiciary and the state.

"Those responsible should admit this as soon as possible, that he was killed under torture and that those responsible for this crime would be punished," he said.

Police have released Mr Khatib's two sisters on Tuesday to try to persuade the family to accept the body.

Latifa and Inam Khatib were detained a few days after the authorities announced his arrest along with 10 other suspects.

Demonstrators blocked the road linking Beirut and the nearby Syrian border during protests on Monday night.

Well Mr. khatib, you should see what they do to high level terrorists that really p*** us off. You might want to pass it along to any buddies you have now about how badly al queda terrorists are going to have it coming to them when they are caught. remind them it is a great time to check into an alternate line of work with better perks than cigarette burns and busted kneecaps.
