Quick question for the limeys

Alright ealdwita. Here is a link for Virginia. I remember being taught that the name came from Queen Elizabeth I, the Virgin Queen. Wiki says it may also have come from a native American word. I think wiki is wrong. What say you?

http://en.wikipedia....Virginia#Colony

I too, was taught that Walter Ralegh (the correct spelling BTW) named Virginia for Elizabeth, but there's no evidence that it was called that until after the colony was set up. I'm going to have to go with the Native American word.

Ralegh was granted letters patent in 1584 ...."...granted by the Queen's Majesty to Master Walter Ralegh, now knight, for the discovering and planting of new lands and countries…"

He never returned to Virginia because the Queen wished him to remain at Court and so command of the seven ship squadron carrying the settlers was given to Richard Grenville.

An excerpt from a letter by Captain Arthur Barlowe, Ralegh's shipmaster reads......."The next day there came unto us divers boats and in one of them the king's brother, accompanied with forty or fifty men, very handsome and goodly people, and in their behaviour as mannerly and civil as any of Europe. His name was Granganimeo and the king is called Wingina, the country Wingandacoa…"

Ralegh is often portrayed as one of the founding fathers of the British Empire. This is misleading. Ralegh certainly imagined more than plantations. He saw Elizabeth ruling over an empire of colonies. Yet his own plans have been exaggerated and it was largely left to others to capitalize on his ideas. He had the chance to exploit a settlement of Virginia (actually North Carolina) but failed to plan properly and find the right people and backers to do so.

That's my take on it susie, for what it's worth.

Thanks for the reply ealdwita. That's really informative. There are many place names here in the US that are of Native American origin. I wasn't aware until now that an Indian Chieftain named Wingina existed. Sounds like maybe the name could have been changed to a more English version, perhaps due to Queen Elizabeth I?

I don't know for definite, susie, but yes, I should imagine it didn't to any harm to whoever named it Virginia. Put him in 'Gloriana's' good books, no doubt.

I'm from Australia, and I can't understand why people feel the need to celebrate one woman's life when she did nothing to deserve it, she won the birth lottery and was born in to royalty.

Hi Zara. I wouldn't exactly call it the birth lottery. Yes, the royal family has wealth, but I would not do her job for all the money in the world. She has worked hard and tirelessly throughout her reign to improve relations with other countries as well as civic duties in her own country. She is not like us. She cannot speak her mind the way we do. I am sure she does so in private though lol. I bet that sometimes she feels she was just a normal person like you or I .........(hang on, you;re not normal are you  )

Anyway. I am glad we have a Queen rather than a President.

A few years ago, I applied to emigrate to Australia and in due course received a questionaire in the post from the Australian Immigration Authority. One of the questions was - "Do you have any criminal convictions?" I was amazed! I didn't think you still needed one!

I see all this hype in the media in the USA about the queen's diamond jubilee (thats a 75th anniversary for the rest of us but apparently it's 60th if your extra priveledged) What is the big deal? Does your monarchy actually serve a function? Do you really feel patriotic loyalty to this family historically consisting of some of the most messed up greedy inbred weirdos in the history of the world?

Sure, I'm trolling a bit, but I honestly would like to see some of your input.

On her accession in 1952, she became Head of the Commonwealth and queen regnant of seven independent Commonwealth countries: the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Pakistan, and Ceylon. Between 1956 and 1992, the number of her realms varied as territories gained independence and some realms became republics. Today, in addition to the first four aforementioned countries, Elizabeth is Queen of Jamaica, Barbados, the Bahamas, Grenada, Papua New Guinea, the Solomon Islands, Tuvalu, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Belize, Antigua and Barbuda, and Saint Kitts and Nevis. Her reign of 60 years is the second longest for a British monarch; only Queen Victoria has reigned longer at 63 years.

She began to undertake public duties during the Second World War, in which she served in the Auxiliary Territorial Service. She acceded to the throne as Queen Elizabeth II on 6 February 1952 and was crowned on 2 June 1953, hers being the first coronation service was the first to be televised.

The royal family is something that i dont really pay attention to even though they do have importance to others. I do think that Britain is a better place with them in place tho. Our two young princes are also good for morale when they visit our troops away from home. The funniest video ive watched of the queen is when she silenced barack obama lol

Tell ya what... Send us your Queen... we'll be happy to send you our President... Plus we'll give you a first round draft choice of any major sport you wish, and a really cool collection of spoons...

And truthfully, it seems that most Americans that can't live without tabloid journalism, are more fixated on the younger members of the Royal family... You don't really see much here about her Majesty...

Sorry Taun, cant do that as your President equals our Prime Minister and one is enough, but you can have ours for FREE with a box of Donuts......Deal ?

She brings in the tourists and its an important part of our history.

She's a good ambassador performing the role of head of state. Value for money, its not just the tourists she's like the front of house meeting and greeting foreign leaders etc.

While in theory she has power to exercise those perogatives would cause a constitutional crisis. It would be the death knell of the monarchy to undermine Parliamentary democracy.

She knows her place. The tail however bright and shiny does not wag the dog.

The Jubilees follow wedding anniversaries.

Some of them vary between the UK (and the rest of the Commonwealth) and the USA.

In the UK the first wedding anniversary is paper, whereas in the US it is cotton. In the UK the second wedding anniversary is cotton, whereas in the US it is paper. In the UK, the 9th wedding anniversary is pottery, whereas in the US it is copper.

But in both countries the Diamond Wedding anniversary is the 60th wedding anniversary.

Therefore it is correct to say that 60 years on the Throne for the Queen is the Diamond Jubilee. To say that that is only the case "for privileged people" is just plain bizarre.

Do you really feel patriotic loyalty to this family historically consisting of some of the most messed up greedy inbred weirdos in the history of the world?

Can you name which of them are "inbred weirdos"? I'd love to read your bizarre rantings again.

No, the monarchy doesn't actually serve a function ........ other than making the downtrodden feel even more aggrieved.

Do you deliberately post rubbish or are you genuinely not bothered about doing actual research?

There is a growing movement to have them replaced.

No, there isn't. The republican movement in the UK is virtually non-existant. This last week has shown just how popular the Royal Family are. The last thing we need is to have Queen Elizabeth II - the most respected public figure in Britain since Churchill - to be replaced by a President Cameron or a President Clegg. That thought just chills my blood.

I think 'apathetic' is the right way to describe most people in the UK and the royalists and the republicans by-and-large and both in the minority.

I just tell it how I've seen it .......... over many years. No research required, just accumulated observations ........ over many years. (I have lived in Britain all my life).

I think 20% of Britons have a negative attitude towards big business, millionaires and Royalty. They dont like the fact other people arent stuck in a minimum wage job and living on a housing estate.

The other 80% of Britons like the Queen, realise she brings in billions per year in tourism and see the Monarchy as part of our British identity. She performs her role without fault and there is simply no reason at all to get rid of her. Shame on those who want a Republic.

There's actually no way of calculating how much tourist money can be directly credited to the presence of the Queen. Tourists are attracted to London for many reasons. I think we can safely say though that 'billions per year' is laughably wide of the mark.

Who said anything about a republic? To say the only choices we have are the monarchy or a republic is as daft as saying the only choices we have for government are Labour and Conservative. Some outside-the-box thinking is desperately needed.

I think 20% of Britons have a negative attitude towards big business, ..

That surely is entirely understandable. it's not necessarily anything to do with jealousy of those who are more wealthy, it's resentment that Big Business is completely above the law or any kind of authority that governments might have.

And i'm pretty sure that the figure is probably much more than that.

The question is though, what is the actual reason for your recommending abolishing them? Is it just the cost? Do you not agree that Governments cost hugely, hugely more, and the amount of good that they do is often hugely more difficult to quantify than for the Monarchy, but the amount of harm they do is surely beyond question? Might there not be at least as good, if not much stronger, an argument for abolishing the current systems of Government and the party systems and putting in some out of the Box thinking there?

Yes I love the Queen and the royal family. An amazing matriarch that has given her life to her cause to an almost mythical level. I was born in England and raised overseas but still regard the monarchy to be an institution steeped in hitory and custom (however bloodthirsty at times). I would hate to see it done away with on account of bourgeoius socialists or foreigners who think that only some bloke in a suit, parachuted in from Oxford or Cambridge could somehow do a better job as Head of State.

Irrespective of the world, Britain (England moreso) needs to hold on to what remains of its culture and history.

One good thing about the monarchy is their neutrality. They represent the Country and it's people. They are not political. They can visit injured servicemen and women in hospital, they can become patrons of charities etc etc etc, not for their own personal gain but to support others and make the public aware of good causes that otherwise would get little publicity. They don't do it for a photoshoot, to get space on the TV or in the papers for themselves, they do it as representatives of the British public who they serve. There maybe are too many minor royals who are not really worth having but what would be the alternative, President Tony Blair and wife waving from Buckingham Palace balcony and probably costing us a damn sight more than people who really love their Country and their people? I know who I prefer!

Yes, wealthy statesmen the world over do this all the time. Did you people over there see George H. W. Bush and Bill Clinton working in Jamaica?

You almost had me there.. then you had to add to the pot...

If you're going to throw in all the others I'll have to up the stakes as well... For Mr. Clegg (whom I must admit I have no knowledge of) you're going to have to take either Al Sharpton or Rush Limbaugh... For Mr Milliband (whom I also know nothing about - sorry) you'll have to take Rosie O'Donnell...

And our politicans are perfectily capable of destroying our country with out any help, thank you very much!

(the candy is always welcome however)...

You are forgiven for not knowing these clowns, we have a coalition gov't here Cammo (Conservative) Cleggy (Liberal) who holds Cammo's hand in case he gets lost, ha ha and (Millie) Opposition top dog. Non of them have a clue, on how to actually run a Country, they couldnt run a P*** up in a Brewery, so we have good old Queen Liz as Head of U.K, Politicians come and go but Royalty is here to stay, perhaps thats why we are a little different to other states ?..I think you had better keep your politicians unless they are pro Brit, but thanks for the fun repartee, cheers
