Saru Posted July 10, 2012 #1 Share Posted July 10, 2012 A man in Japan has built a partner using virtual reality goggles and motion-tracking hardware. A video on YouTube, originally posted at Hack a Day, shows the view through a pair of video goggles that have been augmented with an Asus Xtion motion-tracking tool, essentially an off-brand Microsoft Kinect. Mistydawn Posted July 10, 2012 #2 Share Posted July 10, 2012 This opens up a whole barrel of redoubtable acts of perverted uses by completely sick individuals... but like all things man-made, no doubt there are some potentially good uses... though the bad ones will top the scales as always.

Coffey Posted July 10, 2012 #9 Share Posted July 10, 2012 You want to know the first thing that came to my mind. Zombie games.... WOW. Can you imagine that?! LOL Like killing floor and left for dead etc, in real world like that. You would actually have to excercise to play games. I reckon this is the enxt step for Kinect, what this guy has done is actually incredible. The possibilities are pretty damn awesome for gaming or having your own virtual zoo, pet, etc. Good for kids and adults. Ok there is the downside to it, like perversive stuff. But I reckon if it was as strict as Xbox live is, you wouldn't see anything sick. It would only be normal adult porn. Not the bad stuff. On the bright side aswell, we do have over population problems, so some people choosing to spend their lives with a virtual girlfriend etc might not be too bad of a thing. lol
FLOMBIE Posted July 10, 2012 #10 Share Posted July 10, 2012 (edited) You are right, Coffey, the gaming aspect is indeed very interesting. I used to play a lot of virtual reality games in the 90s, and was really sad when this platforms was abandoned. With today's graphics, it could be really amazing! FLOMBIE Posted July 10, 2012 #13 Share Posted July 10, 2012 There were plenty of games: Boxing (for 2 players), car racing and a 'red barron' type WWII dogfight game (4 players), a role playing game (single player) and a whole bunch of shooters. Pretty cool, that was!

Pretty cool, that was! Oh yeah was that with those goggles? I think they shown them in the film "Toys". I'm suprised that didn't go further? I think a friend of mine had a set of those. FLOMBIE Posted July 10, 2012 #16 Share Posted July 10, 2012 Yup, with that goggles. The ones you were wearing for the boxing game were pretty light, and that was needed, since you were playing upright, while those you were wearing for the dogfight game were pretty solid helmets. I am sure it had something to do with the performance. The whole device was huge, by the way. Nothing for the living room. But now we have whole new possibilities with things like kinect and HD goggles that weigh only a little more that sunglasses. Geez, I already see the holodeck coming!
