World On Alert For Massive Solar Storm

Still Waters

Recommended Posts

Power grids, communications and satellites could be knocked out by a massive solar storm in the next two years, scientists warn.

Experts say the sun is reaching a peak in its 10-year activity cycle, putting the Earth at greater risk from solar storms.

Mike Hapgood, a space weather specialist at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory near Didcot, Oxfordshire, said: "Governments are taking it very seriously. These things may be very rare but when they happen, the consequences can be catastrophic."

He warned that solar storms are increasingly being put on national risk registers used for disaster planning, alongside other events like tsunamis and volcanic eruptions.

There is 12% chance of a major solar storm every decade - making them a roughly one-in-100-year event. The last major storm was more than 150 years ago.

i think it would be good to be pushed back to pre electronic but then again these electronics arnt just fun and to make life simpler but also electronics is used in life saving equipment so health and emergencies would be life threatening, mass producing drugs too wouldnt be done to no electronics but luckily solar storms dont last forever but the damage will last a while to things are put right so life will be lost.

The hum of electricity has always drove me nuts!

Maybe if I lose power/internet I'll be forced to get to know all those weirdos in my neighborhood. :P

I'm not worried... I have a backup generator, a nice DVD collection of my favorite Sci-fi movies, my trusty aluminium foil hat and, uh... you know, the green stuff that makes you feel warm, fuzzy and not give a ****. :passifier:

Yeah it's not that bad a thing, if it doesn't happen during the middle of the hottest part of summer; like 100 degrees or more. I don't know about the rest of you, but I can't seem to live without the air conditioner when it's that damn hot.

And NO ONE wants that.

A doctor would be nice.

I'm fearful that it's going to go septic and then my leg might fall off.

I wouldn't care so much if I didn't have an immunodeficiency, as well as lung problems. I guess I am screwed if this happens.

I can't see power being shut down for any more than a week, however.

Without that 1 key ingredient (electricity) to power our bells and whisles. We're screwed. Accept for people like the Amish

who depend very little on it. Could be the reason why they didn't modernize much. If the grid goes down worldwide, people like

them will adapt more quickly and the rest of us will struggle.
