HMS Ark Royal to be sold off as scrap metal

Former Navy flagship HMS Ark Royal will be sold on as scrap metal for £3 million as part of a move that the Ministry of Defence has described as "difficult but necessary.

An announcement in Parliament tomorrow is expected to reveal the details of the deal after the vessel was decommissioned in 2010 five years ahead of its expected sell-by date.

The decision comes following a bidding process which included proposals to turn the 22,000-ton ship into a helipad in the Thames, a museum, a hotel, a casino or a diving wreck off the South coast.

Absolutely diisgusting that we should cutting back the military budget while we give away £10 billion a year in foreign aid.

We could keep both carriers and create an extra 500,000 solider positions using that money. They can be given trades and then when the economy has recovered turn them out into the work force.

Correct. We give billions every year to India, a country which is rich enough to afford its own space programme.

Yet, at the same time, we are making cuts in an area - defence - in which there should be no cuts. It is an area which should be ring-fenced.

We should cut our foreign aid budget, especially to rich countries such as India and China (a country which is planning on sending men to Mars) whose economies are growing at many times the rate of ours, and spend all those billions that we would save on more important things such as defence. That way we may then find we won't have to make such drastic militarty cuts.

It isnt about whether India needs the money or not.

Its about a Government not getting its priorities right which is the British people. If unemployment was 0.5%, if our army was fully staffed and equiped, if there were no hospital waiting queues, no university fees, etc ,etc and on top of all this we still had a surplus of £100 billion then sure lets spend some of it helping the less well off.

We've gone from 12 aircraft carriers (end of WW2) down to 1 in reserve with no aircraft to put on it anyway.

I tend to look at governments the same way I look at households. You have to budget your out goings accordingly. If you're struggling to find money to feed your rottweiler who's been doing a bloody good job of detering burglars, stop paying for the guy down the street's groceries and gas bills and use the money to feed your dog. Especially when the guy down the road is building a rocket in his back garden

So are we.

If they must get rid of a carrier why not sell it as a carrier to the Chinese for a couple billion.

Instead of a few pennies for scrap metal.

Although it is sad to see the old flag ship go I think it should be kept in perspective. It is 25 years+ old and had very limited capability due to it's size. The Harriers would be totally outclassed by modern aircraft and were becoming far to costly to maintain. The amount of times you heard of Ark Royal was being deployed but had to stop at one port or another (often Gibraltar)to pick up some aircraft was getting quite embarrassing.

The real mess was the constant delays in ordering the replacement carriers leaving us with the gap. There is light at the end of the Tunnel as we should have one or possibly two state of the art carriers with probably the best carrier based aircraft available in a few years.
