None of the above Posted September 12, 2012 #1 Share Posted September 12, 2012 What a load of sillyness! So! How many people are going to call this Iconic London landmark by it's 'official name' now, after it's always been known by it's knickname 'Big Ben'? Simbi Laveau Posted September 12, 2012 #3 Share Posted September 12, 2012 In the last ten years, every damn bridge and highway ,in ny,has been renamed. It's usually a political bid . Like ,Christine Quinn, whom we all hate here, asked ed Koch to endorse her for the next mayoral race.In return she had the 59th st bridge, renamed the Ed Koch bridge. So now, when you google directions,a place you've knwn for decades,as one thing ,is another, and its completely confusing. The triboro bridge was renamed the RFK bridge, about 5 years ago .the interboro parkway is the Jackie Robinson parkway . It's ridiculous .

Space Commander Travis Posted September 12, 2012 #9 Share Posted September 12, 2012 They coudl quite happily rename the tower after her gracious Majesty, since it was only known as the Clock Tower before. Big Ben is, of course, the Bell within it. btw....Where did you see/hear this? It was in the news in June that they were proposing to change the name -http://www.bbc.co.uk...litics-18592966 An up to date source link about this name change would be good * It says on the Wicked Encyclopedia, On 2 June 2012, The Daily Telegraph reported that 331 Members of Parliament, including senior members of all three main parties, supported a proposal to change the name from Clock Tower to "Elizabeth Tower" in tribute to the Queen in her Diamond Jubilee year. This is thought to be appropriate because the large west tower now known as Victoria Tower was renamed in tribute to Queen Victoria on her Diamond Jubilee.[16] On 26 June, the House of Commons confirmed that the name change could go ahead.[7] Prime Minister Cameron announced the change of name on 12 September 2012, at the start of Prime minister's questions.[17]

Coffey Posted September 12, 2012 #13 Share Posted September 12, 2012 That's just silly. The only reason we have the royal family is for tradition, is it not traditional to call Big Ben; Big Ben? I refuse to call ti anything else. Even if it is the actual Bell. I will call the whole tower Big Ben like I always have and everyone else always has. The Gremlin Posted September 12, 2012 #17 Share Posted September 12, 2012 Isnt it the bell inside the tower that is Big Ben, not the tower, or clockface.....although popular culture has considered the whole thing to be Big Ben......i thought the tower was just called Westminster tower.... So whats the prob if they name the tower after her, we'll still hear Big Ben every hour, as always. tourists will no doubt still call it Big Ben..... Just another interesting fact for the tour guides on the open top bus route.
TheLastLazyGun Posted September 12, 2012 #18 Share Posted September 12, 2012 (edited) This is a good idea. The Queen is an amazing and, of course, very popular woman who has served her country really well for over 60 years. Something similar to this has happened before. The Palace of Westminster features three towers: Elizabeth Tower (formerly the Clock Tower - Big Ben is the name of the largest bell within it), Central Tower and Victoria Tower. Victoria Tower is the tallest and largest of the three and when it was completed in 1858 it was the tallest secular building in the world. Victoria Tower was originally called King's Tower in honour of the then reigning monarch King William IV (of whom David Cameron is a direct descendant) but it was eventually renamed Victoria Tower in honour of King William IV's niece, Queen Victoria, after her Diamond Jubilee of 1896. regeneratia Posted September 12, 2012 #20 Share Posted September 12, 2012 (edited) What a shame. While I honor the national identity that the queen brings to her people, I personally do not like the witch. I still have her image here on quite a few coins I got while visiting. TheLastLazyGun Posted September 12, 2012 #22 Share Posted September 12, 2012 (edited) I personally do not like the witch. Is that because you hate people who tirelessly serve their country for 60 years (more than that when you consider the time she spent in the Armed Forces during World War II) and who still do so when most people of their age are retired? To be honest with you I can't see why anyone could feel "iffy" about the British naming a tower on THEIR parliament building after THEIR immensely popular Head of State.
Coffey Posted September 12, 2012 #24 Share Posted September 12, 2012 Is that because you hate people who tirelessly serve their country for 60 years (more than that when you consider the time she spent in the Armed Forces during World War II) and who still do so when most people of their age are retired? Oh please, for the amount of money she gets, she doesn't serve her country... Her country serves her. That#'s like when celebrities say their life is hectic and it's very stressful, thye are living their dream and have millions or in soem cases billions. It's a joke when people say stupid things like that when there is people scavenging for food out of bins. Wow... I'm NOT British and I don't like this...
