NY Soda Ban Passed

Maybe what NYC should do is issue Obesity Cards. The affected retailers will be required to see your Obesity Card, and if you are above a certain BMI you don't get the big drink size. Or, maybe they should just have scales everywhere and if your height vesus weight comes out as Obese, then you don't get the drink.

But then this is not about helping Obese people, is it? It is about being Equal, so that all suffer, not that a few are helped.

Singling out those who are the supposed problem would be discriminatory, right?

Need to get that republican, use to be democrat, billionaire soda Nazi out of office.

People will always do things that aren't good for them like vote for Bloomberg for a third term after he had the law changed so he could and of course the sheeple went along with that.

If I want to drink sugary pop until my fingers look like sausages then so f-ing be it. But I'd be more p***ed off if I liked big diet sodas. Now those guys are screwed too. Or are retailers going to be allowed to keep large cups around for diet drinks?

Good point. Diet soda is supposed to be un-regulated. How are the officials going to know if John Knackbar gave John Sodafreak a diet soda or a regular soda. Is there going to be a TSA style organization that checks all sodas for "diet"ness?

What happened to people making their own decisions about their personal life without the government being involved? Next they will be a ban on condoms because it promotes a loose lifestyle.

This reminds me of a Movie, ah yes Demolition Man

Lenina Huxley: Ah, smoking is not good for you, and it's been deemed that anything not good for you is bad; hence, illegal. Alcohol, caffeine, contact sports, meat...

John Spartan: Are you ****ting me?

Moral Statute Machine: John Spartan, you are fined one credit for a violation of the Verbal Morality Statute.

John Spartan: What the hell is that?

Moral Statute Machine: John Spartan, you are fined one credit for a violation of the Verbal Morality Statute.

Lenina Huxley: Bad language, chocolate, gasoline, uneducational toys and anything spicy. Abortion is also illegal, but then again so is pregnancy if you don't have a licence.

I don't understand why ppl would have to buy sodas in supermarkets and sneak them in.

Nobody is banning sugary drinks as a whole right? They're simply banning the overly large containers.

Also, from the article:

So, knowing about this correlation...isn't it worth just trying it?

Why not make us eat our carrots and green beans? What about their correlations? How about banning cigarettes? How correlated is death to those?

Soda is one of the most unhealthy things we can put in our bodies. My personal code says even one ounce is an ounce too many. I'm thankful government has figured out for us that servings of sugary soda less than 16 ounces aren't bad for our health and that it's okay, after all that important paperwork got done, to just have a can-sized serving.

At least the aluminum industry won't mind. Government and where it draws its lines have no place in the market place.

Let the giant corporations that sell it do that work for you. Restraint of trade. They'll figure it out.

Oh they will,I am sure, but a class action suit, against this *******,by hundreds of p***ed of new Yorkers ,needs to be done at this point .

He does as he pleases, and walks all over us. Business owners comply because they don't want his fines, where he can make more money,as he screws us all.

I'm done,DONE with this ******* .Done

Higher Levels of BPA in Children and Teens Significantly Associated With Obesity

bisphenol A (BPA), a synthetic chemical recently banned by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) from sippy cups and baby bottles. Still, the chemical continues to be used in aluminum cans, such as those containing soda.

“This is the first association of an environmental chemical in childhood obesity in a large, nationally representative sample,” said lead investigator Leonardo Trasande, MD, MPP, associate professor of pediatrics and environmental medicine. “Our findings further demonstrate the need for a broader paradigm in the way we think about the obesity epidemic. Unhealthy diet and lack of physical activity certainly contribute to increased fat mass, but the story clearly doesn’t end there.”

Higher Levels of BPA in Children and Teens Significantly Associated With Obesity

http://www.scienceda...20918111125.htm

the researchers found children with the highest levels of urinary BPA had 2.6 times higher odds of being obese than those with the lowest measures of urinary BPA. Among the participants with the highest levels, 22.3 percent were obese compared with 10.3 percent of the participants with the lowest levels.

Might it be that there are higher levels of BPA in these kids, not because they are Obese, but because Obese kids drink more soda? The problem that should be concentrated on is the Obesity. Fix the dietary issues with the obese kids and the BPA levels will drop significantly. As will high salinity urinary output, high vitamen output, high fat output, and several other issues that come from eating a horrendous diet.

These seems like saying a whale has high salinity in their urine and they eat shrimp. But the obvious fact is that the whale lives in the ocean and drinks salty water.

Shouldn't people take personal responsibility for their weight? And parents for their children's? When did the government have to come in and be all 'my gosh guys, you DO need me to take care of you'. No, let us be intentionally unhealthy because we're adults, not the governments children.

Yes. Yes. I don't know, I thought this was America too. I agree.

This is the same guy that's trying to make electronic cigarettes in NYC illegal as well. Nevermind that they're the FAR better alternative to actually smoking cigarettes which are still VERY legal. Because I'm an e-cig user, who has successfully quit cigarettes using them (after a 30 year habit that frequently exceeded a pack and a half a day) I'm annoyed with these yahoos who have no medical background but are legislating health. Why would NYC try to ban an extremely effective harm reduction tool? I don't get it.

In fact, since I quit smoking 7 months ago, I feel SO much better ... I've started watching what I eat more and more. I've actually switched from diet sodas which wreak havoc with your metabolism, back to cane sugar sodas... it probably equals out to less than 8 ozs a day though. I've added calories, but LOST weight since doing so. I figure since I have p*** poor medical insurance, I should probably get my healthy on... I'm not getting any younger.

I'm torn with this. While I gernerally dislike the government messing with our business.

But we are a fat country. People suck down the sugery sodas by the gallon. Gas stations practically give away 44 ounce drinks.

I don't live in New York, so I'm not affected by it at this point.

You're only torn because you don't care for these things. I don't care much for 40oz of pop either but I recognize the ills of this type of legislation. I think you do too. Wait until you here of something like this that affects something you like. You'll see the bad side then.

We all got to be healthy by cutting out excess sugar, fats, carbs, calories, salt, cholesterol and *gasp* soft drinks. Nobody should force others to live in a way they think is good for them. The "Nanny state" is bound to fail inable to keep everyone safe from alledged harmful substances such as large sized soda cups. The law should be enforcable, if not the law won't do. We passed laws against public smoking and intoxication, keeping alcohol and cigarettes out of minors' hands, and even illegal drugs doesn't seem to be adhered by everyone, making these laws look pointless and only penalizes not prevents these behaviors.

Sugar is sugar, corn syrup, cane, beet, honey, the body reacts to it the same way. So buying soda from Mexico isn't going to help much on calories or how it effects the body. They aren't banning soda just the giant sizes. I don't think that is such a bad thing.

Maybe you missed the study that showed that cancer loves High Fructose Corn Syrup (HFCS) much more than regular sugar.

What doesn't cause cancer? There's a study for everything causing cancer or some other disease.

Loved that movie. Lots of one liners. "You really matched his meat."

They are not limiting the amount of soda someone can drink. They are not even limiting the amount of soda someone can buy. They are only limiting the size of the container that specific places can sell. This is pure crazyness. This will do zero to actually stop obesity. It is only a political stunt. I mean who is going to enforce this law? The pollice? How are the inspectors going to know that a cup is to be used for a banned type of soda and not a diet soda? Completely political and unenforceable.

Well isn't that maybe the point? Not really banning anything so it's not too intrusive. But maybe it is about solely sending a clear message that something needs to be done?

Assemble six middle class self righteous geniuses in a room, give them some wine and watch as they solve the world's problems with ****. Oblivious to the fact that everyone over the age of 16 can see that they are talking ****.

(Assemble six unemployed self righteous idiots in a room and similar occurs but they'll also be thrown out and banned for talking ****. lol)

In my fine country, obviously run by the same breed, you cannot buy two packets of headache tablets in a shop. Lest you overdose. You can buy one though... and then stroll next door and buy another pack. Or go back in five minutes.

Laws made by idiots. Dangerous idiots.

I served in the Army as a Communications Specialist... Much of our portable equipment uses small batteries... We were on an exercise in Wisconsin and as part of my preparations I had to acquire about 300 commercially available batteries (like watch batteries)... So I went to a nearby Wal-Mart - which had sufficient quantities of batteries and grabbed up 300 of them... I was told that I could not buy more than 3 at a time as they were lithium batteries and I might be using them to make crystal meth...

I was in field uniform, with valid Military ID and with written authorization from our unit commander (a 1 star General) and with a government purchase order... They still refused to sell me more than 3 batteries... Morons....

Like you said - laws made by idiots...
