Badger cull aims to curb TB in cattle

Still Waters

Recommended Posts

The first cull will now go ahead in Gloucestershire, a hotspot for the disease.

Animal welfare and wildlife campaigners have opposed the cull, which farmers say is necessary to tackle TB in cattle because badgers spread the disease to livestock, but lost their fight in the High Court.

The cull, which is being paid for by the farmers taking part, will allow the shooting of free-running badgers. A licence will be issued to a group of farmers and landowners who will commit to killing at least 70 per cent of the badgers on their land for at least four years in a row.

Last year some 26,000 cattle were slaughtere because of the disease.

So they're saving one animal at the expense of another. It's a sad state of affairs that is has to come to this.

Strange how quickly an animal can change from being protected to culled...

This made me laugh though,

The cull is opposed by the Badger Trust, which unsuccessfully blocked the cull in the Appeal Court last week.

Is this possible, to unsuccessfully do something?

They need to just come up with a cure for TB.

They have, in as much as the cattle could be vaccinated.

Framers would rather kill one of the few remaining large mammals in the Uk.

Also of course the 'science' behind the cull and it's effectiveness is hotly debated.

Still, on the offchance that it'll work they are prepared to slaughter thousands of Badgers.

Which is pretty much what a lot of farmers do on the quiet anyway.

I find this subject so sad. Badgers are gorgeous innocent animals, they don't mean to cause these problems but are still sentenced to death.

"Owen Paterson, the Environment Secretary, said last week: "I come at this from a practical countryman’s point of view. Nobody likes killing any animals, but we want healthy cattle living alongside healthy badgers."

So they are going to determine if the badgers are infected before killing them? Yeah right.

Phew, much relief!

I was thinking something was terribly wrong having read some of his kind and sensible comments recently.

He's obviously not been active after those features were initiated.

I'm sure neo has no particular deep seated hatred against badgers. He was most probably referring to the clip below.

Anyway, I came out of my posting hiatus as remembering that line in the movie made me chuckle...

Regards to all, be posting again in a couple of years...

Hey einstein, a few points:

1- I don't care

2- I was busy at work for around a year and didn't visit, much less post

Had to go back and like the Stinkin' Badges comment.

It was far to cryptic for me originally, when I watched the clip (thanks rannzie, nice to see your second post since 2009) it all became clear and gave me a good chuckle...

Can't wait for the next Badgers story now, I have a comment that will fit just right. ;)
