Could humans achieve world peace or are we doomed to just keep repeating the same wars and mistakes until we wipe ourselves out?

I don't think humanity has evolved enough to achieve world peace....and probably never will. People are so unaccepting of anyone who is different from themselves, and that's a big cause of the wars on this planet.

OMG Darkwind, look at my latest thread. We are certainly both contemplating the big questions it seems!

World peace.

I don't know. It seems as far off as it was when I was a kid without the

hope that we all seemed to have back then.

I'm afraid of world peace. That means we would have 1 over arching government that rules all of humanity. That sounds more scarey then comforting.

I think world peace is a terrible idea. One government can easily become corrupt and then screw up everything. The best we could do is 9 or 10 really big countries that keep each other in check.

Unless of course...aliens.

Wiping ourselves out might be possible, but I highly doubt it. This material world is not supposed to be peaceful. Desires or wants lead to inequality, etc. Therefore, yes, repeating is the order of the day for most people. There is a way out, which is merging with God(?) through the process of Nirvana. On the other hand, everything in this world is to get us out of here. Once we get really tired of the nonsense, the domino effect happens to eject us. Spirit is not material, to begin with. It (merging) doesn't happen very often, unfortunately. Just look at the population of our world. Most people seem to be very addicted to living and being in the flesh. That's okay, I suppose, since we have all the time in the world anyway -- right? Reincarnation this, dying that. The cycle never ends...but thank God(?), it's not the case for everyone. Everything has its season. We, all, will get our chance of escape. That's the good thing about existence. Edited by braveone2u

Left to our own devices I believe we would destroy ourselves eventually. In fact the Lord Jesus said about 2000 years ago that at the time of the end, unless He returned, no flesh would be saved. Today we have nuclear proliferation finally becoming unchecked. We've reached the point with Iran (could have been any country) that the world has to impose it's will militarily or allow a rogue nation to threaten everyone else. We apparently are choosing short term peace and allowing the threat to become real. So when Egypt and Saudi Arabia decide they need a bomb who will argue? I believe that before we have peace we will have to go to the very brink of annihilation. But the Bible says eventually there will be peace. It will be a peace built on knowledge of the greatest horror man has ever known, but maybe that's what we require to give up our personal desires to be God.

Let's not forget, the will to survive is also very strong.

Just a thought. During WWII, 2 puny countries Japan and Germany thought they could rule the world... Our planet earth may seem small compared to other planets, but it's big enough to house billions of people. With this in mind, and with the internet revolution, people suddenly realized that they have a voice, individual voice. Voice is power. Everyone has it. To let small-minded leaders to "guide" this world?? We are going through a massive change, definitely, but this change is happening individualy. Scary thought?? Just look around you. Examine the forums on the world net. Through the power of the net, U.S.A. got its first African American President -- amazing, indeed.

I don't think there will ever be world peace. Not enough resources for that, extremists in religion won't have it, greed for power and property will always be there. We would have to turn into a whole new species.

i have said it before....

and i will say it again....

people are not the problem....

what the problem looks like to me is this...

the way we think.....

rampant consumerism is chasing an ideal that does not exist....

greed is filling a hole in the self with power over others....

most greedy people i have met have a really fragile ego....

same with people that have problems with anger and violence....

the ego runs the life....

chasing ideals that don’t fit with the self...

comparing the self against imaginary measuring sticks...

all of this is confusing ..... and the problem to begin with....

the pic on the left can be in any mall, any street corner in the western world...

the pic on the right is somewhere far away...

we can all look up and see the moon in its entirety....

but to look at ourselves on this little ball in space seems a million miles away...

to see a picture of the earth from the moon...

people have a hard time connecting with it...

when we look at the moon we see a living being in its entirety...

different then what we would normally think as a living being...

but a living being none the less...

we forget that it is a reflection of our own state on this little ball...

that the people on the other side of this little ball are as close to us as our neighbours in the galactic scale...

but we sit... and watch tv..... and don’t think about how bob in Nairobi is doing....

we don’t think that where we come from....

with the population in the billions ....

that we are connected to bob in Nairobi .....

as soon as people can let go of the thought of "its not my problem" ....

then the sooner we can start to realise peace....

i could rant on the topic...

but i wont...

i have already had a rant or two on the topic...

so i shall just leave it at that...

I think the only thing that could achieve world peace is a threat from outside of this planet that forced us to unite and stay united...

the thought patterns that govern our daily lives....

they separate us and hold us at odds....

if most people were to hear a subtle voice in the back of their heads telling them that a disaster was coming...

they would sit there and say to themselves...

i cant just go away from here....

i have responsibilities and bills to pay....

then sit and be besieged by the coming disaster....

the whole thought process of ...

i have to have a career....

and have a 9 to 5 job....

i have to buy a house and have a family...

save money and pay for an education for my kids...

set myself up so that when i am old i can still be independent....

take care of your own.....

not that any of this is bad....

in any way shape or form....

its just the way it is right now....

the manner in which these things is understood...

there is the twist....

having a 9 to 5 job is the new way of hunting and gathering....

go to work (hunt) make money... so you can go and buy the things you need to live...

go to the grocery store with earned money (gather) to buy food to feed your family (tribe)

this is taking care of your own....

at least how i see it...

but your neighbour is on his own to do this....

separated from your little tribe....

where we all come from at some point in history...

a tribe is the people that live next to you...

the people that are in the same area...

from the children to the old...

they are also a part of the tribe....

and the responsibility of the individual to feed and hunt for the tribe has been narrowed....

to the point where the tribe is those that live in the walls you pay for....

and all outside are no longer your problem or care.....

buying a house.....

something that you have to do...

"own" a little piece of land that you can call your own....

the problem with that is this...

the land was here long before we came about...

and will be here long after we are gone...

to own something implies that it is yours and you don’t have to pay out to anyone for the use of it...

well..... there is land tax.......

and you pay a rent on the land that you own....

and if you don’t keep up on the payment...

the land that you "own" can be taken away....

sounds a lot like a rental agreement to me...

so that is an illusion....

and within that concept of "owning your own house" ....

if the guy next door ... his house burns down...

you say..... " i hope he had insurance" .....

because your not going to open your doors and let his family live in your house....

you hope he had insurance so that his little tribe will have a means to stay separated from your little tribe...

and the social problems of "his" little tribe don’t interfere with the social problems of "your" little tribe...

whereas the sense of tribe means that everybody in the neighbourhood and community would come together and help this person...

provide temporary shelter...

and help work to so this person's little tribe have a wigwam (home) again....

nope... that’s the job of the insurance company....

but they care about the bottom dollar... and what their numbers look like on paper....

so.....

by the hand of the way we think this person is hooped..

on their own to take care of their little tribe....

regardless of circumstance....

not everyone can afford insurance....

paying for an education for your kids.......

of course everyone wants their kids to have a better life then what they had...

its just human nature......

but this has also changed.....

does your neighbour help with your kids homework?

are your kids getting an education from people with knowledge that are around you in your neighbourhood?

no....

we ship them off to a centralised centre of education that dishes out a preformed regimen...

where they are graded and given messages that the manner in which you live depends on their ability to hold and retain the information they are being given...

and then we end up with kids that have to figure out how the whole social aspect of things work from and with other kids...

in the tribal sense....

the kids worked with the parents and neighbours and learned skills and what it means to be a part of the tribe...

how every person contributes to the well being of the entire community...

not just the parents and siblings they have....

so a fundamental learning in the nature of the school system fails on that point at least...

but its also a manner where children learn that its the strong that survive...

all the aspects of kids being mean to each other...

bullies preying on the weaker (supposedly) kids....

and the social pressure is to fit in with one group or another...

separating the mentality from a community based manner of thinking....

to one of a pack mentality....

setting in stone the teachings from said institutions to a mentality of separation...

the mentality of separation, and "its not my problem" are the root of most of our problems in a modern society....

and a mentality that is one of a group, or tribal mentality has been labelled "hippy" or "alternative" ways of thinking...

when in all reality.....

this is where we come from....

and what things were like for 1000's of years before the advent of modern society...

to look upon a stranger and fear them....

not see them as another person with the same problems as we face....

this is what we are taught....

things have changed to the responsibility of the self over the tribe.....

we all have responsibilities to the self...

even in a tribal sense....

but the importance and willingness to place someone else in need over yourself has been lost....

and this is also at the root of the failings of the individual to the tribe....

things change and grow....

people change and grow....

some things have been allowed to grown and propagate through inaction...

and when we take the responsibility of the tribe back from those that have been entrusted with it...

then things change...

change does not come from some miraculous happening's .......

it comes from the choices "you" make every day....

taking responsibility for the choices "you" make everyday.....

how many times could a kind word have changed the outcome of an argument?

or asking..... "do you need a hand?" ...

all small things that change the world....

so... yeah... its not people....

its the way we think......

and that is your choice.....

There's over seven billion ideas of what constitutes world peace. It will never be achieved, so maybe we should stop fighting for it.

It depends on the definition of world peace. Is world peace just for humans? soldier4death mentioned seven billion ideas. How about if there's zero human ideas? If humans go extinct, is there world peace? Or does violence/predation continue?

From a humanist perspective, a terrible threat to earth from outside of this world could jar our collective conscience to come together in unprecedented harmony/solidarity.

From an animalian perspective, all life would likely have to end.

From a religious perspective, the 2nd coming of Christ, the rapture, Armageddon, or some other massive global catastrophe prophesied in books or calendars might need to occur.

From a government perspective, world peace may be possible someday but what a horrible world it'd be not being able to violently throw down people you disagree with and take their stuff!

From a futurist perspective like the Star Trek universe where humanity is so evolved we don't even use money anymore? Nope, still zapping each other!

Nope. Humans need conflict to strive - to keep on achieving - to keep on advancing. If we have "world peace" we would begin to stagnate as a species...

that gets back to the whole concept of the problem being the way we think.....

arguments start because we believe that we are right....

and argument is a heated debate over who is right and who is not...

ego based from start to finish...

to start peace.... might i suggest a simple thought?

everybody has the right to their own opinion....

no matter how wrong it may be.....

there is truth to every side of the argument...

when you sit and listen to what is being said....

you learn a larger view to your own world....

its ok to disagree... but there really is no point to getting wrapped up in ego....

Everyone will differ regardless.. You have your ideas.. others will either agree or not.. Ego is a human stumbling block..many cannot see past it.. We all get a trip or two with our own ego's ..
