Still Waters Posted October 18, 2012 #1 Share Posted October 18, 2012 Jupiter, the largest planet in our solar system, has made some dramatic transformations in recent years, a new study reveals. Huge belts in the giant planet's atmosphere have changed color, radiation hotspots have faded and flared up again, and cloud levels have thickened and dissolved, all while space rocks have been hurtling into it the gas giant, astronomers said. http://news.discover...ges-121018.html
+and-then Posted October 18, 2012 #2 Share Posted October 18, 2012 It's been 18 years since a huge amount of energy was absorbed into the planet from Shoemaker-Levy 9. I wonder if that had any effect on this process being observed.
pallidin Posted October 18, 2012 #3 Share Posted October 18, 2012 OK, so no practical chance of Jupiter becoming our second Sun? Or doing worse?
Ashotep Posted October 18, 2012 #4 Share Posted October 18, 2012 Since we haven't been observing Jupiter for that long with modern equipment this could be normal.

Professor T Posted October 22, 2012 #7 Share Posted October 22, 2012 Global warming is happening on every planet in the system according to some researchers.
None of the above Posted October 22, 2012 #8 Share Posted October 22, 2012 Nothing serious, it's just got gas!
Abramelin Posted October 22, 2012 #9 Share Posted October 22, 2012 Nothing serious, it's just hot gas! The sun is also just hot gas, or plasma if you like. Some say Jupiter is a 'failed star', meaning: not enough helium and/or hydrogen to start nuclear fusion and ignite like a cosmic Christmas tree. In fact, it isn't even close to being a 'brown star'. But no doubt Waspie Dwarf has more insightful info concerning that.

Professor T Posted October 22, 2012 #12 Share Posted October 22, 2012 Which ones? The researchers that is. . I can't quite remember where I first saw it, I think it may have been something on you-tube.. But there's plenty of articals out in Google-world regarding interplanetary global warming occuring from Pluto to earth.. http://www.livescience.com/1349-sun-blamed-warming-earth-worlds.html http://www.skepticalscience.com/global-warming-other-planets-solar-system.htm http://www.bibliotecapleyades.net/universo/cosmos57.htm I didn't think our use of greehouse gasses effected pluto? But there you go.. interweb google fed scientists the lot of us.. lol. personally I blame them on Titan.. All that fart gas cant be good for the solarsystem. Abramelin Posted October 23, 2012 #14 Share Posted October 23, 2012 (edited) I know. It was a weak attempt at humour. And I know now, lol. But although I think I do quite well using the English language, I sometimes miss out on its subtleties. Lol, it's "all just hot air!", isn't it. Anyway, I remember from maybe 20 years ago that there was some 'clairvoyant' English (?) nun who claimed to have 'seen' that Jupiter would some day grow and grow, and then ignite and become a new sun in our solar system. Some people should just never be allowed to watch scifi movies or read scifi books. . Edited October 23, 2012 by Abramelin

So in essence everybody agrees several planets are warming up, but they do not agree on the connecting factor, unless it's just a coincidence connected with coinciding seasons and weather patterns. Yeah, basically that. There's theories.. crackpot theories which are about 50% science and 50% fairytail.. One is of course, ye olde Nibiru, comming in from the cold and heating things up from the outside of the system inwards.. Another is a Photon stream approaching us from the galactic core.. I wouldn't want to claim it's either and feed the fires of speculation, even though it's sometimes interesting to get peoples opinions on these things.. personally I think of those two theories the Photon stream sounds the most likely.. though I'm sure we at UM could come up with some equally interesting causes of solar system warming.. hmmmmmmm, I'm thinking ferrets.. ranrod Posted October 23, 2012 #17 Share Posted October 23, 2012 OK, so no practical chance of Jupiter becoming our second Sun? Or doing worse? No. Jupiter would need to be many multiples of its current mass for that to happen. If it did happen, unlike 2010, the explosion would completely obliterate all life on earth.
