Still Waters Posted October 23, 2012 #1 Share Posted October 23, 2012 Education Secretary Michael Gove is facing calls for every child to be taught the national anthem at school. Tory MP Nicholas Soames, grandson of wartime PM Winston Churchill, wants learning the words of God Save The Queen to be a compulsory part of the national curriculum. And TV presenter and Liberal Democrat peer Floella Benjamin has called for pupils to sing the anthem at the start of each day. http://www.dailymail...las-Soames.html

Ever Learning Posted October 23, 2012 #3 Share Posted October 23, 2012 would be good to have this learnt as i think were lacking a bit of Patriotism. i and most of the people i know only know like one sentence of the national anthem lol its on my to do list as well as alot of other stuff i will prognosticate to the grave lol. patriotism isn't just about recognizing that your country is great but having a love to improve it, if it is not.
Still Waters Posted October 23, 2012 Author #4 Share Posted October 23, 2012 When I was in school we had a piano at home. The first thing I taught myself to play on it was the national anthem, not because it was patriotic, but because the notes were easy to write down and remember. +ouija ouija Posted October 23, 2012 #8 Share Posted October 23, 2012 The problem is that the national anthem is boring and some people want to change it Never mind 'boring', it's an insult to the intelligence of the British public! High time it was changed to something people could be proud of singing and really put their heart and soul into singing it with gusto. And if you think fans of British teams at various sporting events are singing enthusiastically, it's because they're singing 'God save the TEAM' ....NOT 'God save the QUEEN'!
Wickian Posted October 23, 2012 #9 Share Posted October 23, 2012 Nothing really wrong with that. If someone really doesn't want to sing it, don't pressure them to. They'll learn the song anyway by listening other kids sing it every day. I knew some people who refused to say the Pledge of Allegiance in school. Pauly Dangerously Posted October 23, 2012 #11 Share Posted October 23, 2012 All the issues facing modern citizenry and this is the stuff people are worried about... There was a huge fight here in the USA several years ago because people wanted kids to stop saying the pledge of allegiance because of the "under G/god" line. Most people in the US sort of went; "We don't give a ****, fix the education system so that we aren't raising a nation of vidiots with no math or science skills."

Hippycrite Posted October 23, 2012 #14 Share Posted October 23, 2012 Liberal Democrats want this? Must be a different species than the kind here in the US. Our problem here is that most of us don't have the vocal range for our song. We sound more like Roseanne than we do Whitney Houston.

TheLastLazyGun Posted October 24, 2012 #22 Share Posted October 24, 2012 I think this is a great idea. It is not the first good idea from Gove, who's turning out to be a pretty good Education Secretary. For years schools have been run by bleeding heart liberals who have told teachers to teach kids that they should be ashamed of their nation and its glorious past. So we have created a whole children of kids who think that there is nothing to be proud of about this great nation. So it's good to see the government planning on getting schools to teach kids to be proud of their nation and to teach them their national anthem. Schools should also teach kids to fly the union flag as much of possible. It is a beautiful flag and we need to see it flown more often instead of just during great occasions like jubilees or royal weddings. And finally Gove should ensure that schools start teaching kids proper history, rather than just the silly PC history teaching that they are currently receiving about things such as the Suffragettes and the slave trade. At the moment kids are leaving school not knowing when the Battle of Hastings was fought or who Nelson defeated at Trafalgar or what the Wars of the Roses were all about
TheLastLazyGun Posted October 24, 2012 #23 Share Posted October 24, 2012 (edited) it's because they're singing 'God save the TEAM' No, they aren't. Don't be silly. Edited October 24, 2012 by TheLastLazyGun
Hippycrite Posted October 24, 2012 #24 Share Posted October 24, 2012 Yes, those pesky, silly slaves. Why should we want to know anything about them?
TheLastLazyGun Posted October 25, 2012 #25 Share Posted October 25, 2012 (edited) does that include the verse about crushing rebellious scotts. Of course it would. It would be silly to teach children the whole of the national anthem except one line. And you have to remember that Scotland's anthem, "The Flower of Scotland", has lines referring to sending the English homeward to think again, and has those lines at the end of each verse. Yet, unlike you, they don't let silly PC concerns stop them from singing it. what a bloody stupid snobbish idea No, it isn't. It's a bloody good idea. We've had years our liberal rulers demanding that scholls teach kids that being proud of your country may "offend" ethnic minorities and that Britain should be ashamed of her glorious past. We now need to reverse that and have schools teach our kids to be proud of their country; that this is a great country to be in; and that more people having pride in their country will inspire people to do more good things for their country in the world's of business, sports, politics, etc. We should teach kids the song God Save the Queen; it should be sung at the start of every school day; and children should be encouraged to display the union flag often.
