Iran to attend Iraq poll meeting

Iran says it will take part in a US-sponsored conference on election plans for Iraq due to be held in Cairo.

A foreign ministry spokesman said Iran welcomed any proposal for peace in Iraq and had no problem in participating in next month's conference.

But Tehran would have to study the details of how to take part and at what level, Hamid Reza Asefi said.

Iran and the US have no diplomatic relations, but the US is hoping Iraq's neighbours will attend the conference.

Details later

"In principle, taking part in the conference does not pose a problem for us," Mr Asefi told reporters.

"The details on our participation will be announced later," he said.

Washington hopes the conference will help stabilise the security situation enough to permit polls by the end of January 2005.

US and Iraqi forces have said they intend to seize back a number of cities held by Iraqi insurgents in time for the election.

The hopeful part of me is saying "I hope this helps ensure the elections happen on time."

The suspicious part of me is thinking "What is Iran up to?"

I doubt Iran would be up to anything while americans are still in Iraq and are probably really willing to help but its after the americans leave that may be a worry!

huh.gif I agree I don't think they're up to anything, although I wouldn't surpirsed if the extremists want to absorb Iraq into them. Their probabaly there cause is effects the stability of their borders.... even though most of the militants seem to be flooding in from them. wacko.gif

The Iranian Govt are just a bunch of saber rattlers.

Theyre too comfy in their palaces and hypocrytical ruling of their poor masses to start a war.
