Holographic Principle

I watched big bang theory last Thursday and Leonard (main character) said something interesting about the string theory im trying to understand. I will type word for word what he says and hopefully someone can explain it in laymens terms to me. THANKS!!

"There is a foundational idea in the string theory that the whole universe might be a hologram. The holographic principle suggests that what we all experience everyday in three dimension could really be information on a surface located at the furthest beaches of our cosmos. So, its possible that our lives are really just acting out a painting on the largest canvas of the Universe."
