Jack the Ripper was DR Stephen Appleford

British serial killer Jack the Ripper has been identified as an Essex doctor called Stephen Herbert Appleford - by a Uruguayan mathematician who has never set foot in London.

Eduardo Cuitiño says two years of painstaking research has uncovered what Scotland Yard has failed to do since 1888 - in naming the man who murdered at least five prostitutes that year in the capital's East End.

The Professor of Statistics at the University ORT of Montevideo said Appleford was a surgeon working in the London Hospital of Whitechapel - the area where the victims died.

The Jack the Ripper stories has fascinated me for years, I wonder if we'll ever know the identity of the killer?

I think it is likely to be this guy:

DR THOMAS NEILL CREAM: Cream, a doctor specialising in abortions, was hanged in 1892 for several murders he committed in London and his last words were reportedly ‘I am Jack…’.

Yes well, my last words are going to be "I am Batman", doesn't actually make me Batman, does it?

I've also always been intrigued by old Jack. I think it's the unknown factor that keeps people fascinated.

I like the theories that he went to New York and continued to kill. Not cause of the killing, mind you, but because of the mystery.

Many theories have been put forth some even accused George 111. We shall never know the truth, but this cannot be proved by some idiot foreigner quoting maths, how dare he interfere with English History, cheeky swine.

We will never know for sure who Jack the Ripper is. I'm afraid his identity has been long buried. It is an interesting story though and always will be.

Yet another theory on the Ripper's identity, and again no real evidence. We will never know who the Ripper really was, and maybe it's better that way. The main reason we still talk about the murders now is because of the mystery,

Dr. Thomas Neil Cream was in prison at the time of the Ripper murders, so it couldn't have been him. I suppose he just wanted to add onto his so called 'legacy ego' before died.

Hi, have you heard of this theory though?

Yet a good Ripper theory dies hard, and new theorists proposed that Cream actually had a double. The two would help each other by the one being in prison while the other was free committing crimes, using his double's prison sentence as an alibi. Those who support this theory believe this is evident early on in Cream's criminal career, when brought into court on charges of bigamy. He was advised to plead guilty, but refused to do so, claiming he was serving a prison sentence in Sydney at the time. Sure enough, the prison was asked if someone fitting his description was indeed there and they replied in the affirmative. In his biography, Marshall Hall (who defended Cream) is said to have believed that Neill Cream had a double in the underworld and they went by the same name and used each other's terms of imprisonment as alibis for each other.

Therefore, while Cream was in Joilet prison, his double would have been able to commit the Whitechapel crimes -- on the day of his execution, Cream knew he had no chance for survival and decided to free his double by confessing to his crimes.

RIIIGHT.

I prefer the idea that this Doctor Cream (great name for a comic book villain by the way) just used prison like the Joker did, some place to sleep at night and get free meals and he just happily escaped whenever he felt like murdering someone.
