thanks for the reminder. This year I've brought all my ancestors to the altar, with special blessings to those whose lives were troubled. Without the ancestors, none of us would be here

Being of scottish descent and something of a pagan i have a lot more empathy for samhein as a culturla tradition, then for say halloween. It s a fascinating event and ritual. The beliefs underlying it are ancient and deep. However i dont think it has any more relevance to a modern person than the winter or summer solstices or the full moons. With the advent of refrigeration i no longer need to salughter my excess stock and honestly i notice no thinning of the veil or greater proximity of the dead, now than at other times.

it may also be a southern hemisphere thing. We are entering summer rather than winter, and there is a gentle moderation of climate here. No need to kill stock in winter, although some reduction in summer due to a reduction in pastures.

I have noticed with concern the commercialisation of halloween, and indeed for the first time noticed numerous groups of young people out and about in costumes in my local town (not all on all the right date, as many went out on friday night instead) Thank god it is not the right season for pumpkins, down under.

Hold on there Walker, the Pagans in your neck of the woods are doing Beltaine, as your seasons are reverse to ours. I grew up around farms and you still don't want to feed cattle and pigs all winter, so the small farmers still slaughter the animals they don't want to keep.

What relevance does a guy murdered on a cross two thousand years ago (long with the many thousands they murdered on crosses) have to you? The seasons and full and new moon are relevant if you wish as I do to be in tune with the Mother Earth and honor her. Being you're not a Pagan you don't understand the thinning of the vail or your ancestors any more than I feel or get the whole Jesus thing.

I live in Florida and we have two seasons, wet and tourist. But I follow the traditions of my ancestors. Just as Jesus wasn't born on Dec. 25th, but it is tradition.

I am not an exclusivist christian. I follow it as the most locally appropriate form of cultural expression for a person who lives with god on a daily basis. I have a lot of empathy for pagans partly because of my love for history and cultures. In another place and time i could have been apgan Today I am more gean than pagan. I dont celebrate christmas or easter except secularly, because they are simply ceremonies like beltain or samhein and have no spiritual significance in my life. i dont need them to know, love or understand, "god"

One question. I appreciate the hemisherical dichotomy you refer to. BUT how can there be any universality in a ceremony which exists only in one small part of the world. It is reversed in the other hemispheres and doesnt exist in the tropics.

I understand its culturlal and physical roots and appreciate them But they leave a lot of questions open in a modern world.

Personally i am more a gaeist because that is at least applicable to modern times. Samhein really meant something when you lived in a small croft with your animals, and the snow was 6 feet deep outside. When it was dark, cold, and life was always on a knife edge. Today it is more of a cutural relict.

I do appreciate your choice of spirituality.

Perhaps it speaks to your overall nature and world view as much as anything.

In my experience the cosmic consciousness permeates everything. And so nature worship is both logical and realistic for those who live in a natural environment. It is also a good environmental ideal for urbanites but i am not sure how practical. I lived for 30 years on a small farm many miles from anyone else. I could turn off the power, walk outside under the stars and moon and be alone with nature. I speak to trees and animals and sometimes they speak back to me. I have walked many miles and hours alone in the australian semi desert, with only nature for company

Given the physical nature of the world, lack of brain function, ability to speak and think etc., i doubt it is them speaking, but the universal consciousness which inhabits everything I honour my ancestors. First i did a complete family history of my family, detailing every member for nearly 300 years. Second, i was the custodian of all family memorabilia etc until the fire, and third, believe it or not, I commune with some of them via the cosmic/universal consciousness, where their consciousnesses are stored.
