Britain’s Place in Europe

Recommended Posts

Euro-skepticism has remained a current in British politics, long after Britain put aside centuries of anti-European sentiment to join the Common Market in 1973 and to become a member of the more highly integrated European Union 20 years later.

Until now, periodic spasms of parochialism did little lasting harm. But since the European debt crisis and recession, there has been growing sentiment across the British political spectrum for leaving the European Union. As Roger Carr, the leader of Britain’s biggest business group, the Confederation of British Industry, rightly warned on Monday, this latest trend needs to be taken seriously and strongly countered by pro-European business and political leaders. Leading political figures expect a national referendum to be called on continued British membership in the European Union, probably for 2015. If it were held today, an Opinium/Observer poll suggests, the anti-European side would prevail, with a large majority of Conservatives, a plurality of Labour voters and a significant minority of Liberal Democrats voting for a British exit.

Leaving the union would be a grave mistake, sacrificing Britain’s best hopes for a brighter economic future to half-baked longing for the simpler days when the British ruled an empire and had less need for European trade. There’s plenty of time for pro-Europe leaders to make that case. But they must heed Mr. Carr’s advice and speak up.

So we should remain in the EU just because a New York Times article - written by someone who, no doubt, has no idea what it's like to live in a Britain within the EU - says we should?

The Government should listen to the BRITISH PEOPLE - an increasingly Eurosceptic British people - and not some silly New York Times article.

As I've pointed out before, 87% - that's 87% - of the world's countries are OUTSIDE the EU. Yet these countries do not suffer because they are outside the supposed brilliant, and generous, and harmonious and kindly bosom of the EU.

There's a big wide world out there and Britain should now leave this sclerotic and decaying organisation which has such a stranglehold on our economy and start concentrating on closer links with the much more economically vibrant Commonwealth and countries such as China and Brazil.

The British Government should do the right thing and give the British people the opportunity to vote in favour of withdrawing from the EU by giving us the EU in/out referendum that most of us want. They need to give us the referendum NOW. And they wont regret it. Doing so will guarantee that the Conservatives win the next election in 2015 and get rid of the unpopular Europhile LibDems in the process.

The pro EU supports must want Britain to remain at all costs, instead of just saying fine leave (UK) - they dont they scrape the bottom of the barrel to try and persuade us to remain members. yet not one of them can string together reasons why. what we benefit from if we remain, their main argument is trade. but we've already dismissed the notion. in the eu rules they love so much it says if a member leaves negotiations will take place for free trade area. something we want. some say the eu will put tariffs on British exports well its a two way street and what ever tariffs they place we'll place the same on them, tit for tat, with the UK having a deficit with the EU they'll be the looses. but it wouldnt even get to that stage our biggest trading partners are not going to damage themselves. it would be like turkeys voting for christmas.

if we leave we'd be £13 billion better off, we'd reclaim our fishing grounds estimated at £ 4 Billion per year. 68% of European fish are caught in UK waters. and that is just for starters. oh the joys.

So long, and thanks for all the fish.

Bye bye!

Britain needs to get out soon and as fast as possible. When it comes to unions the only one allowed should be with Austrailia, Canada and New Zealand as they are our kind.

We need some economic protectionism too to grow our industry instead of exporting stupid services which dont make anything and expose us to economic problems originating in other countries.

We need to reclaim our superpower status too if we're going it alone. Not 2 aircraft carriers but 10 with lots of fighter jets. Then we can promote our interests on the world stage like the US does.

Which you won't be getting once we leave the EU.

When that happens the richest fishing waters in Western Europe - those of Britain - will be open only to British fishermen.

In fact, British fishermen are amongst the most likely to support Britain pulling out of the EU, considering the devastation that the EU has done to the once-mighty British fishing industry and the amount of money it's thrown at French and Irish fishermen to build up their fishing fleets so that they can plunder British waters.

When Britain leaves the EU within the next five years or so we can finally reclaim control of our own fishing waters.

We would have joined the party earlier had the extremely ungrateful de Gaulle allowed us to.

Economicly it would be bettet for UK without the EU. There are too many restrictions imposed to every country within EU to get them on the same noun. This is in the longrun not sustainable.

Ups stoke just scorred against fulham.

Anyway, The european countries are still very much divided culturaly, in some cases worlds appart.

The EU could survive if the member states could regain more autonomy but also responibility for their economic development.

Politicly, however, it would not be a smart move. Do not count to much on Canada. We only have a common head of state, formaly, but everything else here depends on USA and it will not change in the near future. People here still like Trucks, the open road, the easy comute and US products.

A big fatt steak is on many more menus then fish and chips.

  • 2 weeks later...

Cameron will offer voters in-out referendum over EU membership, says Boris

  • Boris Johnson 'unveiled' PM's plan to hold a referendum on EU

http://www.dailymail...is-Johnson.html

the vote will likely be in the next parliament, if at all, but the vote needs to be a in or out vote.

...but I think we both know that it wont be that simple a question. I wish it would be because the Great Unwashed Electorate could probably just about get their head around such a simple question.

hahaha, okay, here we go again with the annoying game of unending doubt in Britain:

We risk being like Norway if we quit EU, says Cameron - PM warns Britain will be 'unable to influence laws'

  • He warns: 'We will have absolutely no say over the rules'
  • Barroso: 'Britain needs to make up its mind whether it wants to stay in the EU'

Britain faces being ‘governed by fax’ from Brussels and reduced to the standing of Norway if it leaves the European Union but stays in the single market, the Prime Minister said yesterday.

At a lunch in Westminster David Cameron insisted he did not want Britain to leave the EU.

http://www.dailymail...uence-laws.html

Eugh! Cameron apologises for delay in his 'tantric' EU policy which he promises will 'be even better when it eventually comes'

  • David Cameron is due to set out major new policy on Europe within weeks
  • Boris Johnson predicts he plans a referendum which includes an EU exit

http://www.dailymail...worth-wait.html

It's like this annoying lil teenager that wants to make everything about him/her. GET OVER YOURSELF ALREADY.

Britain should not have joined the EU in the 1st place. Who needs it?

The Europeans.

Smartest thing the UK has done in the last 50 years - not chucking the pound and converting to the Euro.

Small islands - smart people. :santa:

You know the point he's making - but just incase - the point lazy gun is making is you do not need to be a member of the EU. - because the overwhelming impression you get from pro-EU supporters is its literally the EU or nothing. Many countries, successful countries are not EU members mainly because of their geographic location, but they set their own trade agreements with the EU. the USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, China, Japan, Brazil, India. just to name a few have successfully negotiated trade deals with the EU, and yet none subscribe to the same conditions such as Norway or other free trade area members - so it proves the point time and again, you do not need to be a member of the political union, you dont even have to be a member of the Free trade area to access the EU, it shows you can trade with the EU be good neighbours/allies have co-operation but do not need to subscribe to the political element, EU laws, diktats or further integration.

We risk being like Norway if we quit EU, says Cameron

You mean incredibly wealthy and free from Brussels rule?

Yeah. I think we should quit the EU and become like Norway. I can't see how Cameron thinks that's a problem.

Funnily enough, investors are dropping the single currency and have started drifting back to the UK Pound.UK Exports to Europe are shrinking and rising to the rest of the world.Who needs the EEC ? A recent Opinium\Observer survey in November now puts 56% of Britons wanting out but i would bet on it being 60 plus % in reality.Cameron is facing a massive rebellion in his own party if he does not use the British Veto in future EEC budget negotiations.Truth of the matter is the EEC is a pile of steaming crap and is so corrupt so lets pull out and stop wasting UK money.
