It also makes me wonder if the mother had any idea what was going on,especially if there were visible bruises on the child

That's exactly what I was thinking,c',mon if I see the smallest bruise on my child I don't miss it,and this child seemed to have more than one...something seem's suspicious about this.

While I agree that what this man did was the most despicable crime against any child, I think criticizing the mother is an easy thing to do without knowing details.

Of course it's easy to criticize the mother. Her job was to protect her child, and she failed miserably.
